Go Ahead Eagles Draw with FC Groningen After Late Drama

Go Ahead Eagles poured everything into the night at De Adelaarshorst. They came back, they roared, they created enough to win it twice. And still, they walked off with only a 1-1 draw against FC Groningen and a nagging sense of waste.

For Groningen, it was pure survival by the end.

Groningen strike first against the flow

The pattern was clear early. Go Ahead on the ball, Groningen retreating, the crowd pushing the home side on. Yet the first punch came from the visitors.

Against the run of play, Brynjólfur Willumsson seized his moment. A loose ball sat up for him on the edge of the area, and he did not hesitate. He drove his shot with venom, the ball ripping past Kjetil Haug and into the net for 0-1. One swing, one goal, and De Adelaarshorst fell briefly silent.

Go Ahead suddenly had to chase. Groningen dropped deeper, lines compact, bodies behind the ball. The home side still found a way to create, and Søren Tengstedt was at the heart of it all.

The in-form forward thought he had his equaliser with a clever, measured lob. The finish was smart, the idea perfect. Etienne Vaessen ruined it, stretching back and clawing the ball away with an excellent save that kept Groningen in front at the break.

Tengstedt delivers again

After half-time, the pressure only grew. Joseph Oosting’s team pushed Groningen further and further back, moving the ball quicker, forcing mistakes, turning the match into a siege.

Chances followed. Thibo Baeten had a look. Stefan Ingi Sigurdarson had one too. Groningen bent but somehow did not break, clinging to the lead as the minutes ticked away and the noise inside the stadium rose.

The resistance finally snapped in the 82nd minute.

A sharp move through the middle sliced Groningen open and the ball fell, inevitably, to Tengstedt. This time there was no saving Vaessen. Tengstedt hammered his finish past the keeper for 1-1, a ruthless strike and his fifth goal of the season. No one in the Eredivisie has more right now.

The stadium exploded. The scoreline was level, but the feeling was that Go Ahead had Groningen exactly where they wanted them.

The miss that will haunt Deventer

A point? Go Ahead weren’t interested. They smelled a winner and went for it.

Wave after wave came at the Groningen back line. Tired legs, desperate clearances, stray passes. The visitors had little left, only grit and a goalkeeper keeping them alive.

Then the moment. The chance that should have settled everything.

The ball broke for Sigurdarson with the goal gaping. 2-1 sat there, almost begging. Somehow, he slid his effort wide of the far post. No deflection, no heroic block. Just a miss, in front of an open goal, that left players and fans alike frozen in disbelief.

That was the game. Groningen, out on their feet, gratefully took the whistle and the point. Go Ahead took the same point, but not the same feeling.

On the table, it goes down as a draw. In Deventer, it will be remembered as the night Tengstedt confirmed his scoring touch again – and the night a golden chance slipped agonisingly away.
