Getafe Signs Orel Mangala on Loan from Lyon

Getafe have moved decisively in the final stretch of the window, bringing in Belgium international Orel Mangala on loan from Lyon for the season, a deal that suits all three parties for very different reasons.

For the La Liga club, it is a calculated gamble on a midfielder whose ceiling has never been in doubt. At 28, Mangala arrives with Premier League and European experience, but also with something to prove after a disrupted spell in France. Getafe will cover part of his sizeable wages, gaining a ready-made option in the centre of the pitch without committing to a permanent fee.

For Lyon, this is about trimming both numbers and costs. The turning point came away from Lyon. While on loan at Everton last season, Mangala suffered a serious ACL injury that stalled his momentum and cast a shadow over his future. By the time he returned, Lyon had moved on, and the club’s financial reality left little room for patience with expensive rehabilitation projects.

So the solution is a season-long loan to Spain. Mangala remains tied to Lyon until 2028, which keeps his parent club protected if he rebuilds his form and value at Getafe. For the player, it is a fresh start in a league that rewards technical midfielders who can handle the game’s rhythm and tempo.
