Gavi's Journey at Barcelona: From Teenage Whirlwind to Seasoned Player

Gavi is no longer the automatic name on the Barcelona teamsheet. Not under Hansi Flick. Not in a squad packed with midfield options and rising stars. But inside the club, one thing hasn’t shifted: the coach’s trust.

Flick still sees him as a core piece, someone to build around rather than push aside. Gavi, for his part, has accepted the new reality. Minutes are no longer handed to him. He has to win them.

He keeps working, keeps grinding, knowing every training session is a trial.

From teenage whirlwind to seasoned 22-year-old

In an interview with "Men's Health", the 22-year-old opened up about how his world has changed since he first burst into the Barcelona side as a teenager.

"Now there is much greater pressure than there was when I was 17 years old. At that time I did not realise where I was. The younger I was, the more I enjoyed football," he said.

Back then, he played as if nothing could touch him. Now he understands exactly what is at stake every time he steps onto the pitch: his place, his status, his future.

And yet the story of Gavi at Barcelona is not just about competition. It is also about survival.

Lessons from the long months out

For someone still so young, he has already had to live through the darker side of the game. Injuries have pulled him away from the spotlight, forced him into long, lonely stretches of recovery while the team moved on without him.

Those months changed him.

"Perhaps I was not patient in the past, but now I am more patient," he admitted. "When I was injured, I had to complete the stages and set goals. It was also useful for me to learn other things beyond football. Now I can say that I take care of myself much better than I did when I started my professional career."

The injury taught him to slow down, to respect the process instead of trying to sprint through it. It also opened his eyes to the parts of life that don’t involve a ball at his feet.

A knee that can’t be forgotten

Even now, with the worst behind him, Gavi knows that the knee which cost him almost an entire season will always demand attention.

"My knee must always be strong, whether I play or not," he explained. "I cannot be lax because the injury could happen at any moment."

There is no off switch. No days where he can simply forget the rehab work or the strength sessions. The fear of going through that ordeal again keeps him sharp.

During that period, he leaned on the people closest to him.

"I isolated myself with my family, and that helped me a lot," he said. While the noise of the outside world carried on, they formed the shield he needed.

Gavi’s verdict on Lamine Yamal

Amid his own battle to reclaim and secure his place, Gavi has had a front-row seat to the rise of another Barcelona phenomenon: Lamine Yamal.

From the outside, the teenager already looks special. From the inside, Gavi insists the real shock comes away from the cameras.

"This player is very skilful on the pitch, but he surprises you even more in training," he said. "I only hope he keeps developing. He is aware of his abilities. He can be among the best of all time."

That is not casual praise. It is a statement from someone who has seen the pressure, felt the weight of the shirt, and understands what it takes to last at this level.

"I see him as mentally strong, and that is the most important thing in the end," Gavi added. "He knows what he wants, and he still has a long football future ahead of him. He must continue in this way every day, because the present is the most important thing, and everyone will be watching him closely every day."

Gavi knows that feeling well: the eyes, the expectations, the demand to deliver now. His own path at Barcelona has stopped being the story of a kid who made it and turned into something tougher and more interesting — a fight to evolve, to stay fit, to stay relevant in a team that never waits for anyone.
