Galatasaray Aims for Historic Fifth Straight Turkish Super Lig Title

The Turkish Super Lig is back on Friday night, and it returns to a familiar scene: Rams Park, lights blazing, Galatasaray walking out as champions. Again.

Okan Buruk’s side start the 2026-27 campaign not just as favourites, but as a club staring down history. No team has ever won five consecutive Turkish league titles. Galatasaray already pushed the bar higher in May, sealing a fourth straight crown and stretching their record haul to 26 championships. Now they go for five.

They open against newly promoted Corum FK at 9.30 pm local time (1830GMT), a gentle-looking start on paper. In reality, it’s the first step in a season where the hunters have armed themselves heavily.

Istanbul giants reload

The rest of the league has seen enough of Galatasaray’s parade. Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Trabzonspor have spent the summer throwing serious weight at the problem.

Fenerbahce, last season’s runners-up, are again cast as the primary threat. Their title drought dates back to 2014, a barren spell that feels increasingly at odds with the club’s size and expectations. So they went big.

Romelu Lukaku arrived from Napoli this week, a headline signing to spearhead a revamped attack. He joins Mason Greenwood, brought in from Olympique Marseille, and Netherlands defender Nathan Ake, snapped up from Manchester City, in a window that screams intent rather than caution.

The test comes quickly. Fenerbahce travel to Ankara to face Gençlerbirligi on Saturday night. A tricky away opener, a new-look side, and a fan base demanding that this finally be the year the wait ends.

Besiktas sharpen their edge

Across the city, Besiktas have been just as bold.

The Black Eagles moved decisively for Dusan Vlahovic, landing the Serbia international from Juventus to lead their line. On the flanks, Belgian winger Leandro Trossard has arrived from Arsenal, adding guile and goals in wide areas.

It’s an attack built to excite and to intimidate. Besiktas unveil it at Vodafone Park on Sunday, when they host Eyupspor to kick off their campaign. For a club desperate to reinsert itself into the title conversation, the message is clear: no more half-measures.

Salah shakes up the balance of power

The most dramatic twist of the summer, though, came away from Istanbul.

Trabzonspor, already a club with a fierce regional identity and a history of breaking the big-city monopoly, pulled off a stunning move by signing Egypt captain Mohamed Salah on a two-year deal. His arrival instantly shifts the spotlight to the Black Sea coast and adds a global star to a league already brimming with storylines.

Trabzonspor start away at Kasimpasa on Saturday evening. With Salah in the squad, every touch, every counterattack, every free kick suddenly carries a different kind of electricity. They are not just chasing a good season; they are openly targeting the Istanbul giants’ dominance.

New faces, new stories

Eighteen clubs line up for the 69th season of Türkiye’s top flight. Three of them are fresh from promotion: Erzurumspor, Amedspor and Corum FK.

For Amedspor, this is uncharted territory. They make their Super Lig debut on Sunday night against Erzurumspor FK, who themselves return to the top division after a five-year absence. One club stepping into the light for the first time, another fighting to prove it belongs again. The stakes might be different from the title race, but the emotion will be just as raw.

Corum FK, meanwhile, get the most daunting introduction possible: away to the champions at Rams Park. Survive that, and the rest of the calendar might look a little less intimidating.
