Fenerbahce Denies Jamie Gittens Transfer Rumours

Fenerbahce have moved swiftly and fiercely to shut down rumours linking them with a move for Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, branding the speculation “completely unfounded” in a sharply worded club statement.

Reports had suggested the Turkish giants were eyeing the 22-year-old just a year after his £51.5million switch from Borussia Dortmund to Stamford Bridge. After a difficult first season in England, the idea of a reset in Istanbul started to gather pace online and in sections of the media.

Fenerbahce were having none of it.

Fenerbahce hit back

The club issued a statement on Saturday, taking direct aim at the stories and the agenda they believe sits behind them.

“Reports circulating in some media outlets today regarding our club's interest in Chelsea FC player Jamie Gittens are completely unfounded and do not reflect the truth,” the statement read.

They went further, accusing unnamed parties of trying to use the club’s name to stir up transfer talk and shape public opinion.

“We once again clearly state that attempts to manipulate Fenerbahçe Sports Club through false transfer claims and artificially created agendas will have no effect.

“Fenerbahçe conducts its sporting structure, transfer policy, and future planning in all branches, especially football, in accordance with its own strategy, needs, and established programs.

“Therefore, we expect this approach of using our club's name to create public opinion and steer Fenerbahçe towards certain directions to cease.”

The message was clear: Fenerbahce will decide their own transfer business, and Gittens is not part of it.

The club also underlined where their attention really lies.

“Our sole focus right now is our match against Gençlerbirliği in the first week of the Trendyol Super League.

“We respectfully request that our great Fenerbahçe fans disregard such unfounded news and continue their support for our teams only by considering the statements made through our club's official channels.”

With that, any notion of Gittens swapping west London for Istanbul was shut down in emphatic fashion.

Gittens’ Chelsea struggle

The noise around Gittens had grown because his first year at Chelsea has been far from straightforward.

The winger made 27 appearances in all competitions last season, but returned just one goal and five assists. For a £51.5m signing, those numbers inevitably drew scrutiny.

Injuries bit hard. A hamstring problem sidelined him for more than 100 days, costing him 22 games. His last competitive outing for the Blues came on January 31, a stark reminder of how stop-start his debut campaign became.

When a big-money signing disappears from the team for that long, rumours tend to fill the gap. Talk of a move to Turkey slotted neatly into that vacuum. Fenerbahce’s statement has ripped it straight back out.

Alonso’s decision

Now the focus shifts back to Chelsea and new head coach Xabi Alonso, who must decide how Gittens fits into his plans.

The early signs suggest the Spaniard sees value in him. Gittens has featured in five of Chelsea’s six pre-season friendlies so far this summer, contributing one goal and one assist under Alonso.

It’s not a spectacular return, but it is significant. He is involved. He is trusted enough to get minutes. And he is showing flashes of the impact Chelsea believed he could bring when they prised him away from Dortmund.

With the Fenerbahce links firmly dismissed, the picture is simpler: Gittens is fighting for his place at Chelsea, not for a move away.

He is now in contention to be part of the squad for Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 24. A year on from that expensive leap from the Bundesliga, the stage is set again.

The question is no longer whether he is heading to Turkey. It is whether he can finally ignite his Chelsea career.
