Federico Valverde Return Date Set for AS Roma Clash

Real Madrid will have to do without their captain a little longer.

The club confirmed earlier today that Federico Valverde has suffered a grade 3 ankle sprain, the damage coming from a heavy challenge by Kang-in Lee during the derby against Atletico Madrid at the weekend. The tackle left the Uruguayan in clear pain and, as it turns out, with more than just a scare.

The medical report stopped short of giving a recovery timeline, but early indications inside the club suggested cautious optimism: a few weeks out, not months. That initially opened the door to a possible return straight after the international break, when Real Madrid host Villarreal in La Liga.

That door is almost shut.

Villarreal comeback unlikely

Journalist Alberto Pereiro now reports that Valverde’s chances of making the Villarreal game are “extremely unlikely” given the current state of the ankle. The midfielder’s progress is being monitored day by day, but the feeling at Valdebebas is clear: no risks.

The internal plan is to have their captain fully fit, not half-ready, and to target the following match – the UEFA Champions League trip to AS Roma – as his true comeback date.

The schedule is tight. Real Madrid face Villarreal on October 10 at the Santiago Bernabeu, then travel to Italy to meet Roma on October 14. The club’s medical staff and coaching team are aligning around the same idea: Rome, not Madrid, is the realistic stage for Valverde’s return, provided his recovery continues without setbacks.

Mourinho’s midfield anchor

Valverde’s absence cuts deep because of what he has become under Jose Mourinho.

The 28-year-old entered the season surrounded by doubts after an underwhelming previous campaign, one that ended in controversy when he clashed with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni. His role and even his long-term future at Real Madrid were openly debated.

Mourinho’s response was decisive. He made Valverde a pillar.

The captain has started all eight of Real Madrid’s matches across all competitions this season, contributing a goal and an assist and setting the tone without the ball. Stationed in a double pivot, he has been the constant while everything around him has shifted.

Bernardo Silva, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga – all have taken turns next to him as Mourinho experiments in search of the right blend. Valverde, though, has stayed on the team sheet, the non-negotiable in a midfield still trying to find its final shape.
