Everton Set for Cash Boost from Man United's Interest in Robinson
Everton set for surprise cash boost if Man United move for Robinson
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back could end up dropping an unexpected cheque through the letterbox at Goodison Park.
Antonee Robinson, now firmly established as one of the Premier League’s standout full-backs at Fulham, has emerged as a serious target for United. If the deal happens, a web of sell-on clauses stretching back six years means Everton are in line for a tidy, if modest, windfall.
From Finch Farm to Fulham – and a money trail
Robinson’s story starts at Finch Farm. A product of Everton’s academy, he never pulled on the shirt in a competitive first-team game. Blocked by Leighton Baines and later Lucas Digne, he was sent out to Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic to find minutes and momentum.
Wigan liked what they saw. They made the move permanent in the 2019-20 season, picking up a young, attacking left-back who needed a stage. Everton, knowing his potential, protected their interests with a sell-on clause: 33% of any profit Wigan would later make from their own sell-on agreement.
That detail is now coming back into focus.
Fulham signed Robinson in 2020. When Wigan “flogged” him to Craven Cottage, they inserted their own clause: 20% of any profit Fulham make on a future sale. So if Fulham cash in, Wigan get a cut of the profit – and Everton get a cut of Wigan’s cut.
It is a classic modern transfer chain. And it is about to be tested.
United interest turns clauses into cash
Robinson’s form in west London has been impossible to ignore. Quick, aggressive in the press, and increasingly polished on the ball, he has become one of Fulham’s most reliable performers. Across 158 appearances, he has chipped in with one goal and 17 assists, but those numbers only hint at his influence down the left flank.
His performances have pushed him firmly onto United’s radar. Fulham value the 26-year-old at around £28m. If United, or any other club, decide to pay that figure, the dominoes fall.
On a £28m sale, Everton are expected to pocket around £1.5m via the layered sell-on clauses. It is not a transformative fee in an era of nine-figure transfers, but for a player who walked away from Goodison six years ago without a senior appearance, it is smart business paying off late.
Honest talks, clean break
Robinson’s exit from Everton was not a story of bitterness or frustration. It was one of clarity.
With Baines still a standard-bearer in the dressing room and Digne the established starter, the pathway was blocked. Robinson has previously spoken about frank conversations with the club’s hierarchy in 2020, when it became clear he needed to move on to play.
Everton, he explained, laid it out plainly: Baines had to stay for his influence and quality, Digne was first choice, and Robinson would be waiting on two injuries just to get a start, struggling even to make the bench. The message was simple – for his career, he had to go and play.
He took that advice. Wigan gave him that platform. Fulham then turned him into a Premier League force.
Now, as United circle, that honesty from Everton’s side is being rewarded in an unexpected way. They lost a promising left-back but may yet profit from the player he became elsewhere.
Fulham’s asset, Everton’s bonus
For Fulham, Robinson is a cornerstone. For United, he is a potential solution. For Everton, he is suddenly a financial footnote again.
If a club meets Fulham’s valuation, the Cottagers bank the main fee, Wigan collect their share of the profit, and Everton quietly sweep up their 33% of Wigan’s gain. Roughly £1.5m for a player who never kicked a competitive ball for the first team.
In a market where numbers often spiral out of control, this is a small figure. But for a club still working to balance its books and reshape its squad, every unexpected million counts.
All eyes may be on Old Trafford and Craven Cottage if a bid lands. Somewhere in the background, though, Everton will be watching too, waiting to see if a former academy full-back can deliver one last return.
