Eclipse Halts AFC Turnford Match Against Cuffley

AFC Turnford expected to be worrying about Cuffley’s front line on Wednesday night. Instead, they found themselves beaten by the Sun and the Moon.

The non-league side, who groundshare at Wormley Rovers Football Club in Wormley, Hertfordshire, were ordered to postpone their Herts Senior County League Premier Division fixture because of the solar eclipse.

The instruction came down from the Herts Senior County League, after guidance that any games at grounds without floodlights could not go ahead during the celestial event.

Founder-player Ronnie Bates had been gearing up for a 19:00 BST kick-off, just an hour after the partial eclipse was due to start.

“We've been told if you don't have floodlights, you have to postpone your game,” Bates said. “I was surprised, but we are just following what has been said.”

The timing made it impossible to ignore. The eclipse, with the Sun almost entirely blocked by the Moon, was forecast to last around one hour and 50 minutes, starting at about 18:20 and finishing by 20:10, with exact times depending on location.

For a club used to battling the elements and the calendar, this was something new.

“It's unusual to see a game called off like that, as we've never had it before,” Bates admitted. “We are starting to lose light in the evenings, but we normally play at 15:00.”

AFC Turnford, formed six years ago by a group of friends from Haileybury Turnford School in Cheshunt, have been steadily climbing the local ladder. They play in the Premier Division of the HSCL and chart their progress on YouTube, a modern touch for a grassroots outfit still reliant on traditional facilities.

This time, those facilities fell short. No floodlights meant no football.

Cuffley FC confirmed to the BBC that all clubs in the league had been contacted by the HSCL and Hertfordshire FA and asked to move any fixtures that could not be played under lights on Thursday because of the eclipse.

So a rare astronomical event has done what heavy rain, frozen pitches and fixture congestion often threaten but don’t always achieve at this level: it has stopped football in its tracks.

For AFC Turnford, chasing momentum and dreaming of climbing higher, the question now is simple. When the Sun returns and the lights come back on, how quickly can they pick it up again?
