Djed Spence's Potential Move to Liverpool

Djed Spence has made his move. At least in his mind.

The England international is understood to be keen on a switch to Liverpool, with Tottenham Hotspur naming their price as the transfer window edges towards its decisive weeks.

Liverpool’s summer so far has been precise rather than spectacular. Two signings in, Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet, and a clear sense that the squad remains unfinished. The club are pushing to bring in PSG pair Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye to bolster the wide areas, but Andoni Iraola’s problems run deeper than the flanks.

The defence is stretched. Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez are all currently unavailable for various reasons, leaving Liverpool light both at centre-back and full-back. For a coach who demands intensity and aggression in wide defensive areas, it is a concern that cannot be dressed up.

So the search has widened. A new full-back. A new centre-back. And somewhere near the top of that list sits Djed Spence.

Spence’s stock has risen sharply. He impressed for England at the World Cup and emerged as one of Tottenham’s better performers last season, a rare constant in a campaign that rarely settled. His form has put him in what agents like to call a “strong position” – young, in the team for his country, and with a clear pathway to a bigger role elsewhere.

Yet his future at Spurs is far from guaranteed. With Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson expected to be the preferred full-backs next season, Tottenham are prepared to listen under the right conditions. Competition is fierce, the squad needs trimming, and Spence is one of the players who could command a serious fee.

At Anfield, the interest is real, even if those close to the club are playing it down publicly. Anfield Sector reported that Spence is “extremely receptive” to the idea of joining Liverpool this summer, underlining that Iraola has “defensive concerns around the current right-backs” and that Spence is among several names being assessed.

The message is clear: Liverpool like him. Spence likes Liverpool. The rest is about money and timing.

On that front, Tottenham’s stance has started to harden. Spurs reporter @szyexcl stated that the north London club would seek at least £35m for Spence, adding that Liverpool do indeed hold an interest and that the player would be “very open” to a move if an offer arrives.

Inside Tottenham, some believe that figure should be even higher. Former Premier League scout Bryan King argued last month that Spurs would be “stupid” to sell the defender for less than £50m, insisting that a current England international of Spence’s age and profile should not even be considered for anything close to £25m.

“You wouldn’t let him go for £25m. You wouldn’t even start thinking about letting him go for under £50m,” King said, reflecting the sense that Tottenham finally possess a full-back whose value is only heading one way.

Liverpool, though, are operating under their own pressures. With the window ticking down and injuries biting, Iraola must decide how far he is willing to push for a defender who would arrive not as a squad filler, but as a genuine contender to start. The club’s recruitment team have other options, other names on the list, yet Spence’s mix of Premier League experience, international pedigree and age makes him a particularly attractive solution.

Tottenham have set the bar. Liverpool know the numbers. The player has made it clear which way he would like this to go.

Now it becomes a question that defines both clubs’ summers: does Spence become the defensive pillar Liverpool are searching for, or the asset Tottenham refuse to cash in on too soon?
