Deco on Gordon vs Rashford: Barcelona's Tactical Shift

Barcelona sporting director Deco has drawn a clear tactical line between Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford, insisting the former Newcastle winger is a better fit for Hansi Flick’s plans at the Camp Nou.

Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, scoring 14 goals in all competitions and helping the club to a La Liga and Copa del Rey double. The deal included a permanent option set at £30.3m (35m euros), a relatively modest fee in today’s market for a forward of his pedigree.

Barcelona walked away.

The 28-year-old returned to Old Trafford in the summer as the Spanish champions chose not to trigger the clause or extend his stay. Instead, they pushed their budget into two marquee signings: Gordon from Newcastle United and Rodri from Manchester City, the club’s most expensive additions of the window.

Speaking to Catalan radio station RAC1 on Thursday, Deco underlined that the decision was not a rejection of Rashford’s quality, but a question of identity and intensity.

“We are extremely grateful to Rashford,” Deco said. “He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony’s. His style fits with what the coach is looking for.”

Gordon as the solution to a specific problem

Barcelona had spent much of last season wrestling with a recurring issue on the flanks. When Raphinha was missing, the team’s pressing and vertical threat dropped. The energy dipped. The side lost a gear.

Deco admitted that gap drove their pursuit of Gordon.

“In the case of Gordon, we saw that he was one of the figures we needed,” he explained. “When Raphinha wasn’t on the pitch, the team lost energy and with him we could solve it. The big advantage we had is that the player wanted to come and he was able to put on pressure [at Newcastle to be allowed to leave].”

Gordon arrived from Newcastle in a deal worth more than 80m euros (£69.3m), a fee that underlined both Barcelona’s conviction and the Premier League premium Deco says is now almost unavoidable. The England international has long spoken of his affection for the club, even claiming he believed he would play for Barcelona from the age of three.

That childhood conviction has quickly turned into responsibility. Flick wants wingers who can press high, run relentlessly and stretch games. Gordon has been dropped straight into that role.

A targeted rebuild under Flick

Deco revealed that Barcelona did not simply jump at the first available winger. They ran through a long list of options before landing on Gordon as the one who best matched Flick’s demands.

“We had a clear idea what we’re looking for,” he said. “We needed more intensity. We analysed a lot of wingers. Signing someone from the Premier League is almost impossible, but [Flick] was clear with what he wanted and we worked on a deal from there.”

The club’s summer business was framed around plugging specific weaknesses rather than adding big names for the sake of it. Gordon and Rodri were the headline arrivals, both seen internally as pieces that raise the collective floor rather than just the highlight reel.

Early evidence backs that up. Gordon has made five appearances so far and already has four assists to his name. Barcelona have won all four of their La Liga matches, scoring 17 goals and conceding only two, a start that suggests Flick’s blueprint is taking hold quickly.

Rashford, meanwhile, is back at Manchester United, his Barcelona chapter closed after a productive but ultimately short-lived spell. Gordon has taken the space he left behind and reshaped it in his own image.

Barcelona chose style, intensity and a winger who had been dreaming of the Camp Nou since he was a child. The question now is how far that conviction can carry Flick’s side this season.
