Davide Frattesi Returns to Lazio: A New Chapter in Rome

Davide Frattesi is back where it all began. Back in Rome, back in Giustiniana, this time wearing the shirt of Lazio and walking into Formello not as a hopeful kid, but as a 24-year-old Italy international ready to carry weight on his shoulders.

The club have officially unveiled him as their latest midfield signing, completing a move that dragged longer than expected because of minor bureaucratic snags. The deal never truly felt in danger, but the wait stretched just enough to test patience.

“When days like this happen, you go back and forth,” he told the club’s media. “It was tiring, but beautiful: it was worth it.”

Frattesi admitted those final days were emotionally charged. The tension of the last signatures, the calls, the uncertainty – all of it, he said, was lived “with desire.”

The moment he arrived in the area, the past came rushing back. The roads he knew as a boy, the pitches where he trained at Giustiniana, the routine of a Roman kid chasing a dream. Only this time, he stressed, everything feels different. “I’m returning with a different sense of responsibility and greater maturity. I think the time has come to take on important responsibilities, and I’m very happy to do so.”

Lazio have paid to show that faith. The Biancocelesti take Frattesi on a paid loan worth €5 million, a serious outlay for a temporary deal. They hold an option to buy for €10 million, with further bonuses tied to performances. Inter, careful not to lose control of a player they still rate, have secured a 50% sell-on clause on any future capital gain from his next move.

His spell at San Siro never quite settled into a starring role. There were bursts of energy, goals, and cameos that lit up games, but never the guaranteed starting spot a player of his ambition craves. Even so, he forged a bond with the Nerazzurri support. “Even at Inter I had established a good relationship with the fans, despite playing little,” he said. “There were ups and downs, but we always got along.”

The pull of something bigger for himself, though, was impossible to ignore. Gennaro Gattuso’s Lazio project offered exactly what he wanted: a central role, continuity, responsibility. “This involvement from the Lazio fans has pleased me very much. I needed to feel at the center of a project again: this welcome charges me a lot,” he admitted.

He knows what comes with coming home. Rome amplifies everything – the praise, the criticism, the noise. Frattesi doesn’t sound interested in ducking any of it. “I return with a different responsibility and with greater maturity,” he repeated, underlining the message. “I think the time has come for me to take on important responsibilities and I do so very willingly.”

This move did not appear out of thin air. The midfielder revealed that the clubs had already danced around a deal earlier in the year. “We had been quite close in January, then for a series of reasons we were unable to close,” he said. This summer, when the call finally came, the window for doubt was tiny. “They informed me a couple of days ago: there was only time to decide and settle the papers. I didn’t have many doubts.”

Now the clock is ticking toward the new Serie A season, and the margin for adaptation is slim. Frattesi will be expected to slot quickly into Gattuso’s midfield, bringing the same vertical running, aggression, and box-to-box presence that made him stand out at Sassuolo and attracted Inter in the first place. He offers bite without the ball and goals with it – a dynamic presence through the middle that Lazio have been craving.

The club have invested, the coach has called, the city is watching. Frattesi has come home asking for responsibility. Soon enough, Serie A will show whether he’s ready to carry it.
