Dan Burn Named Newcastle United Captain: A Dream Realized

Dan Burn has lived this moment in his head since he was a kid on the terraces. Now it’s real.

Newcastle United’s new head coach Matthias Jaissle has confirmed the boyhood Magpies fan as the club’s permanent captain, filling the vacancy left after Bruno Guimaraes’ summer departure.

For Burn, who has pulled on the shirt 193 times since arriving in 2021, the armband is more than a promotion. It’s personal.

“It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United,” he said, the announcement finally making official what many inside the club had long felt was coming. “It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.”

This is the culmination of a four-and-a-half-year spell that has mirrored Newcastle’s own resurgence. Burn came home, helped drag the club away from trouble, then into Europe, and into nights that will sit with supporters for a generation.

“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments,” he said. “I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”

Jaissle didn’t hesitate to nail his colours to Burn’s mast. For a coach stepping into a club in transition, choosing a captain is a statement. He has gone for the local heartbeat.

“Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain,” Jaissle said. “He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.”

That commitment, in the manager’s eyes, stretches far beyond 90 minutes.

“Off the pitch, he leads by example in how he conducts himself. Not many people understand what this club means to the city better than Dan and that experience will be vital in helping guide our younger players through this period of change and adaptation.”

Newcastle now move into a new era with a Geordie at the front of the line, carrying the armband he once watched from the stands. The question is no longer whether Dan Burn can lead this team.

It’s how far he can take them.
