Cristhian Mosquera's Injury Update: Arsenal's Early Season Fitness Challenge
Cristhian Mosquera’s hamstring scare has handed Arsenal an early-season fitness riddle, but Mikel Arteta is refusing to sound the alarm.
The defender limped out of last week’s clash with Aston Villa, sitting down and clutching the back of his leg before being withdrawn. Arteta moved quickly that night to calm nerves, insisting: “He is fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something.”
Seven days later, Mosquera was nowhere to be seen against Chelsea.
His omission at Stamford Bridge, where Ezri Konsa stepped in for his full debut, sharpened the focus on that initial diagnosis. What looked like a precaution suddenly felt like a problem.
Arteta, though, pushed back on talk of a major setback in his post-match briefing. He confirmed the issue is muscular, but not, in his view, a serious one.
“He had a muscular issue, and we think it’s not too much,” the Arsenal manager said. “But we need to wait and see the next few days for how it evolves.”
That wait now runs straight into a pivotal week. With Napoli visiting on Wednesday, Mosquera’s chances of featuring look slim if the club’s medical staff still need “a few more days” to assess him. A return against Sunderland on Saturday appears the more realistic target.
The immediate consolation for Arsenal came in the shape of Konsa.
Thrown in from the start against Chelsea, the summer signing delivered a composed, authoritative display, highlighted by a thunderous challenge on former teammate Morgan Rogers that jolted the away end to its feet. It was the sort of tackle that announces a defender to a new crowd.
Konsa is only just back from his holidays and still building up his sharpness. Arteta will be wary of asking too much, too soon. But if the centre-back’s body allows him to go again in midweek, there will be little concern about whether he can handle the stage.
Mosquera’s hamstring needs time. Konsa’s Arsenal story is only just beginning. How Arteta balances the two over the next few games could shape the rhythm of his back line for weeks to come.
