Cillian Sheridan Backs Motherwell to Secure Conference League Spot

Cillian Sheridan has never been shy of an opinion, and he is not about to start now. The former Motherwell striker is adamant his old club will not let a two-goal advantage slip in the Faroe Islands as they chase a place in the third qualifying round of the Conference League.

Alfred Johansson could hardly have asked for a cleaner start. In his first competitive match in charge, Motherwell handled the occasion and the expectation at Fir Park, beating HB 2-0 with goals from Martin Moormann and Lukas Fadinger. A new manager, a European night, and a cushion to take on the road. It felt like a statement of intent as much as a scoreline.

HB Torshavn arrive at this tie as a solid but unspectacular side. Fifth in the Faroese top flight after 16 games, they earned their Conference League berth by finishing second last season, not by dominating the division. They are seasoned enough to be awkward, not powerful enough to terrify.

That context shapes Sheridan’s view. Speaking on the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast, he nailed his colours to the mast. He believes Motherwell have done the hard part and must now show the composure and authority expected of a Scottish Premiership club in Europe.

He framed it bluntly: you do not travel to the Faroe Islands with a 2-0 lead and come home empty-handed. For Sheridan, the gulf between a full-time Scottish side and a team that only qualified via league position, not a title, should tell in the decisive moments of the second leg.

He even invited the backlash if he is wrong, saying he is prepared to have “egg on his face” should HB turn the tie around. The confidence is striking, but so is the challenge it lays down to Johansson’s players.

They have the platform. Now they have to prove they are as ruthless on foreign turf as they were under the Fir Park lights.
