Christopher Nkunku stands at a crossroads again, barely a year after arriving in Milan with a price tag and expectations to match. The club have made their stance brutally clear: he is not in Ruben Amorim’s plans, he has been left out of the squad, and he does not even have a shirt number for the new season.

He is on the market. And the queue is forming.

Newcastle put the money down

Italian reports indicate Newcastle United have submitted the strongest offer to Milan so far. The Premier League side are said to be ready to pay around €30m for the France international, a figure that would draw a relatively clean line under his brief spell in Serie A after last summer’s €37m plus add-ons move from Chelsea.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that both Newcastle and RB Leipzig are in direct contact with Milan. No agreement is close yet, but the framework is clear: Milan want to sell, Newcastle are prepared to pay, and Leipzig are very much in the conversation.

Calciomercato and Milan reporter Daniele Longo add a crucial layer. Newcastle’s proposal is currently the most favourable for the club. On paper, it is the deal that makes the most sense for Milan’s balance sheet.

On the pitch and in the player’s mind, the picture looks different.

Leipzig calling

Nkunku’s best football lives in Leipzig. Those numbers still jump off the page: 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 games for RB Leipzig between 2019 and 2023. That spell turned him from a talented prospect into one of Europe’s most feared attacking threats.

His trajectory shifted after the €60m move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023. The rhythm that defined his Leipzig years faded, and his form never truly recovered in London. The reset in Milan has not worked either, despite a respectable return of eight goals and three assists in 35 competitive appearances last season.

No surprise, then, that reports in Italy say Nkunku would prefer to go back to RB Leipzig. It is the club where he played his most devastating football, the environment where his instincts seemed to sharpen rather than blur.

Milan’s decision, Nkunku’s choice

Milan hold the contract and the leverage. Newcastle hold the strongest offer. Leipzig hold the player’s preference and his past.

For now, both interested clubs remain in talks with Milan, with no deal at an advanced stage. The situation is open, but not indefinite: Milan have already moved on in sporting terms, and Nkunku’s exclusion from the squad under Amorim underlines the urgency on all sides.

Newcastle can give him a fresh Premier League stage and offer Milan a clean financial exit. Leipzig can offer familiarity, a system built around his strengths, and the chance to rediscover the version of himself that once terrorised Bundesliga defences.

The money points one way. The heart, and perhaps the football, point another.
