Fofana Leaves for Servette as Chelsea Trim the Squad

David Datro Fofana’s Chelsea chapter is over almost before it began.

The club have agreed a permanent deal with Servette FC, with Fabrizio Romano reporting a €2.5 million fee plus €1 million in add-ons. For a player signed with such promise from Molde in January 2023, it’s a stark illustration of how ruthless the project at Stamford Bridge has become.

“It’s over between CFC and Fofana,” Romano wrote on X, summing up a short, stuttering spell.

Fofana, 23, arrived on a seven-year contract worth around $10.9 million and scheduled to run through 2028. He never got close to justifying the length of that deal. According to The Athletic’s Simon Johnson, he made only four appearances for Chelsea, and spent most of his time on a carousel of loans: Union Berlin, Burnley, Goztepe, Fatih Karagumruk and Strasbourg.

The club had earmarked him for a permanent sale all summer. Now it’s done, another name crossed off from a bloated roster that is being aggressively cut down.

Martinez Arrival Puts Sanchez Under Pressure

While Fofana heads for Switzerland, a World Cup winner has walked through the door.

Emiliano Martinez has joined from Aston Villa, a major move in Chelsea’s goalkeeping hierarchy and a direct challenge to Robert Sanchez’s status as No 1. Romano reported that Martinez was in London on August 28 for medical tests and to sign a contract running until June 2028, with an option for a further season.

It’s a statement signing. Martinez brings presence, experience and a big personality into a dressing room that has been flooded with youth and potential. He also brings a clear question: where does this leave Sanchez?

Chelsea have not answered that publicly, but the message is obvious. No position is safe.

Midfield Target: Lamine Camara on the Radar

The churn does not stop at the back.

Chelsea have held talks with AS Monaco over midfielder Lamine Camara as they search for more options in the middle of the pitch ahead of the September 1 deadline. Romano reported that the two clubs met on Thursday to discuss Camara as a possible target for Chelsea’s midfield.

Monaco, though, are not simply rolling over. They still hope to keep Camara and are also in negotiations for Pape Matar Sarr from Spurs, a dynamic that could shape how open they are to selling.

Time is tight. If Chelsea want Camara, they may need to move decisively in the final days.

Across the Premier League, few clubs have been as active as Chelsea in this window.

They have added big names like Martinez, shed younger players who never quite broke through, and kept the rumor mill spinning with constant links to fresh targets. The Fofana sale is part of a broader pattern: long contracts handed out in one phase of the project now being unwound as the club tries to streamline a swollen squad and sharpen the competitive edge.

Enzo Fernandez: The Saga That Won’t Go Away

Amid all of this, one name looms larger than the rest: Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentina international continues to be linked with Manchester City, with speculation intensifying after he did not feature in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup match against Luton. In a window full of movement, his absence felt loud.

Asked about the decision, manager Xabi Alonso framed it as a football call rather than a transfer signal.

“We assess individually, collectively what is the best for the team for tonight, what is better for other players that were playing,” Alonso said, via ESPN. “It was our decision, from myself and from the club.”

So far, Chelsea have not received an offer for Fernandez that matches their valuation. That stance has held. The question is how long it will last with the deadline looming and City watching.
