Chelsea’s clear-out under Xabi Alonso is accelerating, and the first big wave is already forming.

The new head coach has placed eleven players on the market and, according to multiple reports, three high-profile defensive exits are now close, with Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi all lining up moves away from Stamford Bridge.

This is not a gentle reshaping. It is surgery.

Alonso trims a bloated squad

Chelsea have once again attacked the summer window with familiar ferocity. Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck have all come through the door, and another signing has been agreed this week.

Yet the numbers still don’t add up. The squad remains swollen, the pathway to minutes for several players increasingly narrow. Alonso, backed by the hierarchy, has responded by drawing a hard line.

The club have already banked over £100m from the sales of Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George. Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto are all being linked with moves as well, with Neto the latest Chelsea name to land firmly on Manchester City’s radar.

According to The Athletic, none of that trio is considered “not for sale” this summer. The same report lists Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Emmanuel Emegha among those available, while Badiashile, Disasi and Chalobah are described as set to move on.

The message is stark: reputation and recent arrival no longer guarantee security.

Chalobah to Como as the first domino

The first defender out looks set to be Trevoh Chalobah. After weeks of negotiation, Chelsea have finally agreed a deal with Serie A side Como, clearing the way for the academy graduate to leave.

For a player who has lived the full Chelsea cycle – youth product, breakthrough hope, squad option, expendable asset – the move underlines how ruthless this phase of the project has become.

And he will not be alone.

Badiashile closes in on Napoli switch

Journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Benoit Badiashile is closing on a move to Napoli, with an agreement in principle already in place between the player and the Italian club.

On X, Schira detailed a contract running until 2031 – a one-season loan followed by a four-year deal – worth around €2.8m per year. Talks between Napoli and Chelsea are said to be progressing well over a loan with an option to buy.

For Chelsea, it is another sizeable investment from a previous regime being quietly moved aside. For Badiashile, it is a chance to reset at a club that still sees him as a central piece, not just another name in a crowded dressing room.

Disasi set for Premier League stay

Axel Disasi, fresh from a loan spell at West Ham, appears likely to remain in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace are, according to Schira, closing in on a deal to take the centre-back on loan from Chelsea, with an option to buy that could turn into an obligation if certain conditions are met.

It would be a significant defensive addition for Palace and another sign that Chelsea are prepared to offload players who, not long ago, were presented as core parts of their long-term spine.

Three centre-backs, three different destinations, one clear conclusion: Alonso wants a very different profile at the heart of his defence.

Mudryk’s return gives Alonso another call to make

Amid the churn, there was one emotional moment this week. Mykhaylo Mudryk, back from a doping ban, returned to the pitch in Chelsea’s defeat to Juventus.

Alonso admitted he had planned the cameo in advance.

“Yes, for sure, I’m really pleased for him. It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back, especially when I told him that before the game that was my idea, that he could play 10-15 minutes,” he told reporters. “He was thrilled, for sure. It was, after such a long period, to be back on the pitch, it was a great feeling for him and a great feeling for everyone as well.”

Mudryk’s situation now sits on Alonso’s desk alongside the transfer lists and squad maps. Does he become a central piece of the rebuild, or another big-money question mark in a summer defined by hard decisions?
