Chelsea Set to Sell Delap for £50 Million After Tough First Season

Chelsea are prepared to cut ties with Delap just a year after bringing him to Stamford Bridge, with the club slapping a £50 million price tag on the striker as they trim down an overloaded squad ahead of the new campaign.

Several Premier League clubs are circling, with Everton and Nottingham Forest among those keeping a close watch on the situation.

The numbers from Delap’s first year in west London tell their own story. Two goals in all competitions, a season in which Chelsea missed out on European qualification and fell to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, and a forward who never truly settled into the rhythm of the side.

Pre-season has done little to change that picture. Delap has struggled to convince Xabi Alonso he should be central to Chelsea’s plans, and his performances in the warm-up games have left his long-term role under serious question. As Alonso reshapes his attack before the September transfer deadline, Delap has moved towards the front of the list of potential departures.

Everton’s interest comes with a pointed reference from their past. Former Toffees scout Bryan King has previously argued that Goodison Park would be the ideal platform for Delap, highlighting Romelu Lukaku’s transformative loan spell on Merseyside. Lukaku, King noted, “went on loan and really made his name up at Everton” – a route Delap could seek to emulate, even if Chelsea’s preference is a permanent exit.

But this is not just about one striker. Chelsea are undertaking a broader clear-out in the final third. The club’s attacking department is swollen, with Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu also drawing attention from elsewhere for both loan and permanent moves. The message from the boardroom is clear: the squad must be streamlined, and the forward line is under the knife.

Defensive decisions are running in parallel. Talks are ongoing over potential moves for Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, while Benfica are tracking Tosin Adarabioyo. Younger defenders Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino are being lined up for possible loan spells before the window shuts, as Chelsea attempt to balance immediate needs with long-term development.

All of this lands on Alonso’s desk with a hard deadline: September 1. He must decide who stays, who goes, and who accepts a reduced role. For Delap, the stakes could not be clearer. Either a club meets Chelsea’s £50m demand and offers him the regular minutes he craves, or he risks slipping into the background at Stamford Bridge just as the new Premier League season roars into life.
