Chelsea's Midfield Dilemma: Wijnaldum as a Short-Term Solution

Chelsea are scrambling to plug the Enzo Fernandez-sized hole in their midfield – and Georginio Wijnaldum has suddenly emerged as a serious option.

Enzo’s deadline-day switch to Manchester City for a staggering £125million dominated the final hours of the window. Chelsea thought they had a replacement lined up in Monaco’s Lamine Camara, but that move collapsed before the cut-off. The clock hit zero, Fernandez was gone, and Xabi Alonso was left short in the very area he can least afford to be.

Wijnaldum back on the Premier League radar

According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea have already made contact with Wijnaldum, who has been without a club since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in the summer. Now 35, the Dutchman is being considered as a short-term fix – a veteran stopgap to steady a midfield suddenly stripped of its World Cup winner.

Wijnaldum knows this league, and he knows its demands. He was a central figure in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool machine, winning the Premier League title in 2020 and clocking up 277 appearances in English football across spells with Newcastle and the Reds. He chipped in with big goals, but his real value came in the invisible work – the pressing, the positioning, the reliability.

His numbers in Saudi Arabia last season show there is still fuel in the tank. Seventeen goals in 34 games for Al-Ettifaq underline that he remains an influence in the final third, even if that form did not translate into a new contract there.

For Alonso, that blend of experience and familiarity with the Premier League makes Wijnaldum a tempting option while the club reassesses its long-term plan in midfield.

Alonso’s midfield puzzle

Alonso has wasted no time stamping his ideas on this Chelsea side. In the opening league fixtures, Romeo Lavia has started both matches at the base of midfield, with Reece James and Cole Palmer operating alongside him at times. Fernandez, amid intense speculation over his future, did not feature as the saga with City rumbled on.

Once the deal went through, Alonso was clear that he would put the squad first, even if it meant sacrificing a marquee name. After Chelsea’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton, the new head coach was asked about the situation and kept his focus on the bigger picture.

"We will see. We want the best for team. If anything that will happen or develop, we are not sure. We are preparing for all the scenarios, but I know that from Wednesday, we have a team to challenge and I want to win," he said.

Those scenarios now include bringing in a 35-year-old free agent to anchor a midfield built around youth and massive transfer fees.

Caicedo concern adds urgency

The equation has become even more complicated with Moises Caicedo’s fitness. Signed for £115m and earmarked as one of the pillars of this Chelsea rebuild, the Ecuadorian limped off on Sunday, raising fresh concerns over Alonso’s options in the centre of the pitch.

Take Fernandez out of the squad, add a potential issue with Caicedo, and suddenly the depth chart looks dangerously thin for a club expected to compete on multiple fronts.

That is why Wijnaldum, a player who once dictated games at Anfield and St James’ Park, is now back in the frame. For Chelsea, the question is simple: can a short-term dose of experience stabilise a midfield in flux, or will this be a sticking plaster on a wound that still needs major surgery?
