Chelsea's Brighton Plan Centers on Moises Caicedo

Chelsea’s Brighton plan hangs on one name above all others. Moises Caicedo.

The midfielder’s fitness is the question that shadows everything before Sunday’s Premier League game at Stamford Bridge. Xabi Alonso wants him involved. Chelsea need him involved. But as of Friday, the club are still waiting for a clear answer after he picked up an injury in training last week.

He sat out the wins over Fulham and Luton Town. The message from Alonso was cautious optimism, nothing more. Caicedo was due back in training on Friday, with the head coach admitting they are “still checking” and that no final call has been made. The mood is positive. The guarantee does not exist.

Caicedo call will define Chelsea’s midfield

With Caicedo, Chelsea gain control and edge in the centre of the pitch. Without him, the picture changes.

Alonso is not short of alternatives, but none bring quite the same blend of aggression and composure. Reece James, Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia are all available and give Chelsea different ways to build the midfield. Enzo Fernandez is the other major storyline. He was expected to be in the squad against Luton, then left out, with interest from Manchester City swirling around him. For now, the only thing that matters is whether he is fit enough and chosen.

Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra remain out, trimming the options and sharpening the focus on Caicedo. Chelsea can survive without him in short bursts. They are simply a more complete side when he is there to anchor them.

Martinez arrival sharpens goalkeeper debate

The calm around Chelsea’s goalkeeping position has gone.

Robert Sanchez, once the clear No 1, looks to be sliding down the pecking order after the club agreed a £7.5million deal with Aston Villa for Emiliano Martinez. Mike Penders started and kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Luton, while Sanchez watched from the bench. Alonso has already decided who starts against Brighton. He is just not sharing it.

Behind that decision, the defence is about to get a lift. Wesley Fofana returns from suspension and is in line for his first competitive minutes of the season, a significant boost to Chelsea’s back line. Young defender Josh Acheampong is also expected to make the squad.

Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda missed the Luton game, but Alonso has played down any serious concern. Both were set to train on Friday with Sunday in mind. Colwill, in particular, is being managed carefully after his recent injury lay-off and a run of three games in a week. Chelsea do not want to rush him and risk a setback.

Palmer to lead new-look attack

Up front, Cole Palmer remains the reference point.

He played the full 90 minutes on Thursday and there is no suggestion he will be rested. Alonso is expected to keep him in the starting XI as part of an attack that also includes Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro, a trio still learning each other’s movements but already showing flashes of understanding.

The predicted shape is familiar: a 3-4-2-1 that leans on energy in wide areas and sharp combinations between the lines.

Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-2-1): Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Acheampong; Gusto, Caicedo, James, Chavarria; Palmer, Rogers; Joao Pedro.

Caicedo and Fernandez remain the two main doubts. Palestra and Henderson are ruled out. Kick-off is 2pm BST on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Stamford Bridge.

For Chelsea, the brief is brutally simple: get Caicedo on the pitch, settle the goalkeeper debate, and own the midfield. The rest of the afternoon might flow from there.
