Breel Embolo Joins Switzerland's World Cup Squad After Visa Approval
Breel Embolo will finally join up with Switzerland’s World Cup squad in the United States after a late visa approval ended an anxious wait for one of Murat Yakin’s key forwards.
The Swiss football federation confirmed on Thursday that the 29-year-old is expected to land in San Diego on Friday evening, days after his team-mates flew out to their pre-tournament base in California without him.
From boarding gate to back office
Embolo had been due to travel with the rest of the squad on Tuesday, only for his ESTA travel authorisation to be flagged for further review shortly before departure. While the rest of the players settled into camp on the West Coast, he stayed behind in Switzerland, stuck in limbo and waiting on a decision from U.S. authorities.
The uncertainty dragged on for several days, forcing the federation and player into a scramble behind the scenes to clear his entry. For a squad already fine-tuning details for a World Cup campaign, the absence of a frontline striker was an unwelcome distraction.
The tension broke on Thursday.
“We have just been informed that Breel Embolo’s visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening,” the federation announced in a statement, drawing a line under the saga.
Legal past under fresh scrutiny
The delay did not stem from footballing matters. U.S. authorities ordered additional checks, prompting Embolo to attend an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Bern on Wednesday. Officials reviewed documents tied to a legal case arising from a 2018 altercation in Basel.
They also requested court records relating to a 2023 conviction for making multiple threats, which led to a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year. The case had already run its course in Switzerland, but under U.S. entry rules it triggered another round of scrutiny before any visa could be granted.
Only after those documents were examined and cleared did the green light arrive.
A timely boost for Switzerland
For Switzerland, the timing matters. With the tournament fast approaching, Yakin can now plan with one of his principal attacking options back in the fold, rather than working through contingency plans and fitness compromises.
The paperwork is done, the questions answered. Now Embolo’s next appointment is not in an embassy office, but on a training pitch in San Diego.
