Bordeaux Falls to Sixth Tier as Court Confirms Exclusion

The Paris Administrative Court has upheld the sanction imposed by the French Football Federation (FFF), confirming the club’s definitive exclusion from the national championships and sending it down to Régional 1, the sixth level of French football.

Financial lifeline rejected

This ruling closes the door on a turbulent 2024 that saw Bordeaux enter bankruptcy proceedings and lose their professional status. The club’s ownership changed hands when Gérard López sold his shares to Sparta Capital for a symbolic one euro, a gesture that underlined just how desperate the situation had become.

Sparta Capital arrived with a rescue blueprint: an investment plan worth 10.6 million euros, aimed at settling debts and keeping the club inside the professional structure. It was a last throw of the dice to convince the authorities that Bordeaux could still stand on its own feet.

The court did not bend. By backing the FFF’s disciplinary decision, it effectively ruled that the financial plan, however ambitious on paper, did not outweigh the gravity of the situation that had led to the initial sanction.

A giant in regional football

The consequence is stark. Bordeaux, a club associated with European nights and title races, must now restart in Régional 1. That means trips to small grounds, modest budgets and a complete exit from the professional divisions for the 2026–2027 season.

The task ahead is enormous. Rebuild the squad. Rebuild the structure. Rebuild the trust of a fanbase that has watched a historic institution slide from the top flight to the edge of obscurity.

For now, the verdict stands: Bordeaux are no longer part of the national professional pyramid. The question is no longer how far they can fall, but how long it will take them to climb back.
