Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers: A Seasoned Defender's Journey
Ben Godfrey’s career has rarely followed the quiet route. Now, the 28-year-old defender is heading to Rangers ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, arriving on a deal that includes an option to make the move permanent next summer.
It is a significant capture. This is a player capped at senior level for England, a defender who has lived the pressure of the Premier League and sampled life in Serie A. Rangers are not taking a punt; they are adding a seasoned campaigner to their back line.
Godfrey’s journey began far from the glare of major European nights. He started with hometown club York City, learning the trade in the unforgiving environment of lower-league football. From there, Norwich City spotted the potential and brought him into their academy setup, a move that would set his career on a steeper trajectory.
By the 2018/19 season, he had forced his way into the Norwich first team and stayed there. He became a regular for the Canaries, anchoring a defence that helped drive the club to promotion to the English Premier League. That campaign marked him out as one of the most promising young defenders in the country, combining athleticism with a willingness to take responsibility on the ball.
The step up came in 2020. Everton moved for him in the summer window, and Godfrey walked straight into the intensity of a Merseyside derby, making his debut in a 2-2 draw. It was a baptism under floodlights, but he settled and stayed. Over 100 Premier League appearances followed during his time in England, a body of work that hardened his game and sharpened his instincts.
Italy came next. In 2024, he joined Atalanta, swapping the Premier League for Serie A and adding another tactical education to his CV. The second half of last season took him north again, this time to Denmark, where he joined Brøndby on loan in the Superliga. Different leagues, different demands, the same defender collecting experience at every stop.
Now the next chapter is in Glasgow.
On signing for Rangers, Godfrey made no attempt to play down the scale of the move. “I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here. I know the size of the club so it is a massive honour to be wearing the shirt this season, and I can’t wait to get started,” he said, outlining exactly what this opportunity means to him.
His message was clear: he is not arriving to make up the numbers. “I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”
Derek McInnes, assessing his new defender, underlined why the club pushed to get the deal done. “Ben is a player who has competed at a very high level throughout his career. He’s played in the Premier League, been involved with England, and brings a lot of experience with him,” the manager said.
McInnes highlighted the blend of attributes that made Godfrey such an attractive option. “He’s a strong, athletic defender with good qualities both on and off the ball, and we believe he can add a lot to the squad. We’re pleased to get him in, and I’m looking forward to working with him in the season ahead.”
Rangers wanted a defender who knows what it takes at the top level, who has felt the strain of promotion pushes, relegation battles, European ambitions. In Godfrey, they have signed exactly that. Now comes the real test: can all that experience be turned into the kind of steel and composure that brings silverware back to Ibrox?
