Barcelona's Transfer Dilemma: Kounde's Future and Dumfries' Move
The season has barely closed and Barcelona are already deep in the next battle: the transfer market. The message from the sporting department is clear – a new centre-forward tops the list – but nobody at the club is naïve enough to think that is the only position under review.
Right-back is back on the operating table.
Kounde question opens the door
Jules Kounde’s performances at full-back have never fully settled the debate inside the club. He arrived as a central defender, has often been used wide, and now finds himself at the heart of one of the summer’s key dilemmas.
Barcelona are prepared to listen to offers for the Frenchman. They are not pushing him out, but they know his situation could trigger serious movement across their defensive line. If a major bid lands, the dominoes start to fall.
That is where Denzel Dumfries comes in.
Dumfries back on the Barça radar
According to FC Inter News, relayed by SPORT, Dumfries has re-emerged as a live target for Barcelona. The Inter Milan right-back is expected to be on the move this summer, with his camp already working to secure him a place at one of Europe’s elite clubs.
The Netherlands international is open to offers. His new representatives have already sat down with Liverpool and Barcelona, two clubs that tracked him in the past and never fully closed the file.
Ali Barat, now handling Dumfries’ interests, met Deco only a few days ago to outline the player’s situation and conditions. The conversation did not spark an immediate bid. Barcelona will not jump until they know what exits – if any – will reshape their back line.
Inside the club, there is no illusion: any serious attempt to bring Dumfries to Catalonia depends heavily on a substantial transfer involving Kounde. No Kounde deal, no room for Dumfries.
A €25 million window – and a clock ticking
Dumfries’ contract offers a rare opening. The defender has a €25 million release clause that activates in July. It is not permanent. The clause runs for just one month, meaning any club wanting to sign him under those terms must move quickly and decisively in that window.
It is the kind of clause that forces choices. Wait too long and the price goes back into Inter’s hands. Move too soon and you commit before knowing what you can sell.
Barcelona know this scenario well. Last summer, Jorge Mendes, then representing Dumfries, pushed hard to place the Dutchman at the club. The deal never materialised, blocked by the Catalans’ salary restrictions rather than a lack of interest.
The admiration never really faded.
Cancelo first, then the rest
Right now, the roadmap is set. The immediate objective is to close an agreement with Al Hilal to keep João Cancelo. The Portuguese full-back, comfortable on both flanks, remains the priority solution for the wide defensive roles.
Only once Cancelo’s future is resolved will Barcelona turn fully to their outgoing business and a broader rebuild of the back line. That is the phase where Dumfries could move from possibility to plan.
Inside the sporting department, both Deco and Hansi Flick are said to rate Dumfries highly. They see a profile the squad lacks: a physically imposing, direct, and dynamic wide defender who can stretch games and bring power to the flanks.
His salary demands are considered manageable within Barcelona’s wage structure. The problem is not the wage; it is the architecture around him. To fit Dumfries in, the club would need to execute an ambitious series of departures, starting with a major decision on Kounde.
The path is there. The clause is there. The admiration is there.
Now Barcelona must decide how bold they are willing to be with a defence that could look very different by the end of July.
