Barcelona Sells Jofre Torrents to Ajax for €6 Million

FC Barcelona have agreed to sell promising full-back Jofre Torrents to Ajax in a deal worth around €6 million, including fixed and variable fees, with the Catalan club retaining 50% of the player’s rights.

The agreement between the clubs was closed on Thursday night, when the final transfer documents were signed, bringing an abrupt end to Torrents’ rise through the Barcelona system just as it seemed to be gathering pace.

From La Masia to Amsterdam

Torrents, 19, is expected to travel to Amsterdam in the coming hours to undergo his medical and sign a four-year contract with the Dutch giants. His move will mark his first professional experience outside Spain.

For now, he is waiting on Barcelona’s final authorisation to fly. If the green light arrives quickly, the medical and contract signing will follow immediately. If not, the plan is for him to travel on Sunday, watch his new teammates from the stands, and complete his medical on Monday.

Ajax host Heerenveen at 16:45 on Sunday in the second round of the Eredivisie, and the club wants the young defender integrated into the group as soon as possible.

La Masia graduate moves on

Torrents joined La Masia in 2017 as a ten-year-old and has climbed through the age groups with the profile of a modern full-back: aggressive in the press, comfortable on the ball, and quick to join attacks.

His senior breakthrough came last season, when he made four official first-team appearances for Barcelona. He also featured in pre-season this summer, playing in friendlies against CE Europa and Birmingham City as he tried to convince new coach Hansi Flick.

Instead, his pathway now runs through Amsterdam. At Ajax, he will walk into a demanding environment and fight for minutes in direct competition with Caio Henrique, who arrived earlier this summer for €10 million.

Deco trims the squad

For Barcelona, the deal fits neatly into Deco’s plan to streamline the squad and generate funds before the transfer window closes. Torrents’ sale is another step in a wider clear-out that is beginning to reshape the club’s depth chart.

At least five more departures remain on the table. Marc Casado, Hector Fort, Tommy Marques, Guille Fernandez and Toni Fernandez have all been training away from the main group in recent days. The club wants to avoid unnecessary injuries while it works on exits for players who are not in Flick’s plans.

All five are available for transfer. All five are products of the academy system.

Torrents is the first of that cluster to find a new home. The question now is how many more La Masia names will follow him out the door before the window slams shut.
