Barcelona and Real Madrid are circling the same prize again. This time, the tug-of-war is over Rodri, Manchester City’s metronome and Spain’s World Cup-winning captain, with the Catalan club trying to crash a party Real thought they were hosting alone.

Barça move as Rodri talks stall

Rodri has entered the final year of his contract at City. The Premier League champions still want him to sign a new deal, but with no agreement in sight, they are understood to be open to a sale at around £60m. For a player who won the Golden Ball as the best player at the last World Cup, that figure has not gone unnoticed in Spain.

Real have spent weeks in talks with Rodri and his camp without finding a breakthrough. The hesitation has given Barcelona their opening. Sensing vulnerability, Barça have formally registered their interest in the 30-year-old as they scramble to react to Frenkie de Jong’s knee injury, which is expected to sideline the Dutch midfielder for several months.

For City, the timing is awkward. Rodri has undergone minor back surgery and will miss most of their pre-season programme. Even so, they have been planning around the possibility of change. Barcelona hit a wall over Julián Alvarez

While Barça try to muscle into the Rodri race, their long-running pursuit of Julián Alvarez has hit a brick wall in Madrid – the red-and-white half.

The next flashpoint is already marked on the calendar. Alvarez is due back for pre-season training on Monday. If he reports as normal, Atlético will feel vindicated in their refusal to engage. If he stays away, the pressure on the club hierarchy will spike and the transfer saga will ignite.

Arsenal, watching closely, retain an interest of their own. A single decision from the player could reshape the market for elite forwards in an instant.

For now, Barcelona are caught between two battles: trying to steal Rodri from under Real Madrid’s nose, and trying to prise Alvarez from a club that insists he is untouchable. One breakthrough in either front could change the balance of power in Spain’s midfield and attack for years to come.
