Barcelona’s chase for Julian Alvarez has turned into the transfer saga Atletico Madrid never wanted.

The Catalan club, left without a recognised No. 9 after Robert Lewandowski’s departure and Ferran Torres’ move to PSG, have zeroed in on the Argentine as their priority striker signing this summer. And they have not gone away.

Atletico’s response has been blunt: no talks, no negotiations, no sale.

But the real problem for Los Colchoneros is no longer Barcelona’s persistence. It is what all of this is doing to Alvarez himself.

Atletico’s dilemma: keep the star, manage the fallout

According to SPORT, Alvarez has made it clear he wants the move to Barcelona. Atletico, though, are standing firm and refusing to even open the door to an exit.

That leaves the club in an awkward position. If they succeed in blocking the transfer, they then have to bring back into the fold a player who has pushed to spend the season somewhere else. A player who, for now, sees his future in blaugrana.

Inside the Metropolitano, the concern is growing. Not about the size of Barcelona’s next bid, but about how this tug of war could weigh on Alvarez’s mind over the course of the season and drag down his performances.

It cuts straight to the heart of Atletico’s stance. Miguel Angel Gil Marin has gone as far as to declare publicly that Alvarez would not be sold “even for €200 million”, reinforcing the message that the 26-year-old is seen as a cornerstone of the project.

But a fundamental player who is unhappy can quickly become a problem rather than a pillar.

Simeone left to handle the human side

Diego Simeone will not be the man who decides whether Alvarez is eventually sold. That call lies higher up. What he cannot avoid is the fallout if the club continue to refuse any negotiation.

The calendar does him no favours.

Atletico kick off their La Liga campaign against Malaga on Wednesday, which means Simeone must decide almost immediately whether Alvarez goes straight back into competitive action in the middle of this storm.

The first clue will arrive with the squad list on 19 August. If Alvarez’s name is on it, the focus will shift sharply to two things: does he play, and how do the fans inside the Metropolitano react to a player who has pushed for a move to Barcelona?

A misstep there, and the situation becomes even more delicate.

Barcelona running out of time

On the other side of the equation, Barcelona cannot simply sit and wait.

Hansi Flick’s squad is short a natural centre-forward and the need is urgent. Alvarez is the chosen man, but Atletico cannot be forced to change their mind. If the stalemate continues, Barça risk entering the new season with a glaring hole through the middle.

That is why, even as they monitor every twist in the Alvarez saga, the Catalans know they must start moving on parallel tracks. Alternatives have to be explored now, not in the final frantic hours of the window.

Earlier today, the club were linked with a move for Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres, though Fabrizio Romano quickly cooled those rumours, indicating that this path is not currently active.

So the question hangs over the final weeks of the market: will Atletico eventually soften and listen to offers for Alvarez at the right price, or will Barcelona be forced to abandon their top target and pivot elsewhere while Simeone tries to rebuild trust with a striker who wanted out?
