Barcelona's Plans for Messi Tribute on Hold Amid Rift with Laporta

Barcelona are not working on a tribute or farewell match for Lionel Messi, despite the club icon edging towards the end of a once-in-a-generation career.

According to information relayed to Barça Universal by journalist Adrian Sanchez, there is currently no project inside the club to stage an official homage to the Argentine. No date pencilled in, no opponent discussed, no farewell game quietly being prepared in the background.

For a player who defined an era, the silence is deafening.

A wound that never closed

Messi’s place in Barcelona’s history is untouchable. The goals, the trophies, the nights when Camp Nou seemed to orbit around his left foot – all of that is secure.

What never recovered was the way it ended.

In 2021, Barcelona did not lose Messi on sporting grounds. They lost him to the balance sheet. La Liga’s financial regulations and wage limits boxed the club in so tightly that, despite Joan Laporta winning the presidency on a promise to keep Messi, Barça ultimately withdrew the contract offer.

The image that remains is brutal: Messi in tears at a farewell press conference, forced to leave for Paris Saint-Germain because the club could not make the numbers work.

The damage did not stop at the exit door. Laporta did little to kill the speculation. He openly declared that “Leo deserves a statue at Camp Nou,” and repeatedly referred to Messi as a Barcelona legend. The door, it seemed, was at least ajar.

Yet the latest indications point in the opposite direction. Despite those public words, there is no concrete plan on the table to turn them into a farewell fixture or an official ceremony. No schedule, no structure, no sign that a tribute is imminent.

The relationship between Messi and Laporta remains described as completely broken, and that reality continues to weigh on every potential gesture.

Laporta has still spoken of hope. He has suggested that a full public homage could arrive once the Camp Nou renovation is complete, hinting at a future night when a rebuilt stadium might finally salute its greatest ever player.

For now, though, the greatest No. 10 in Barcelona’s history waits without a date to come home.
