Barcelona Shifts Focus in Left-Footed Centre-Back Search

Barcelona’s search for a left-footed centre-back has taken another sharp turn, and it’s away from two of the most talked‑about names on the market.

Transfer specialist Matteo Moretto has made it clear: Castello Lukeba and Goncalo Inacio are not the players Barcelona are currently trying to sign.

Flick wants a specialist – but not a headline name

Inside the club, the profile is clear. Hansi Flick wants a natural left-footer at the back, someone who can give him a specialist option and balance a defence that has long leaned heavily to the right.

Reports in recent weeks suggested Barça were moving quietly, working on a defender outside the obvious shortlist. Moretto has now added weight to that idea, revealing that the player in question does not play in Spain and is unlikely to be instantly recognisable to casual fans.

That description immediately pushed Lukeba into the spotlight. The RB Leipzig defender has been followed by Barcelona, and Flick is known to appreciate his ability to play both as a centre-back and as a left-back.

Yet that link has now been shut down.

Lukeba ruled out “100%”

Despite the interest and his fit on paper, Lukeba is not the man Barcelona are negotiating for.

Moretto has ruled out the Leipzig defender “100%”, a firm line that effectively kills off the idea that the 23-year-old is the mystery signing the club hope to unveil.

On a purely sporting level, Lukeba would tick many boxes. He can cover multiple roles across the back line, reads the game well, and his natural comfort on the left would directly address a weakness Barça have been trying to solve.

But the club’s recruitment drive is clearly heading in another direction. Barcelona are not simply working through the most obvious, high-profile names already circulating in the rumour mill. The message from the sporting department is that the chosen target sits outside that group.

Inacio also off the table

The same verdict now applies to Goncalo Inacio.

The Sporting CP centre-back has regularly been mentioned in connection with Barcelona’s search for a left-footed defender, but Moretto’s latest information indicates that the Portugal international is also not part of the current plan.

Here, the key detail is reputation. According to Moretto, the player Barcelona are actively working on is less well known than both Lukeba and Inacio. That would go some way to explaining the lack of concrete leaks and the absence of a clear front-runner in public reports.

Barcelona seem determined to keep this operation as quiet as possible, pushing ahead with a deal for a defender who, for now, sits outside the obvious names. The only certainty is that when the identity finally emerges, it won’t be one of the usual suspects.
