Barcelona's Hansi Flick Turns to Szczęsny After Garcia's Injury

Barcelona’s calm first half against Racing at Camp Nou ended with a jolt as goalkeeper Joan Garcia failed to reappear after the interval, forcing Hansi Flick into an early change in goal.

Garcia had slipped shortly before half-time, an innocuous-looking moment that suddenly took on more weight when Wojciech Szczęsny emerged from the tunnel with the team for the second period. The Pole’s introduction marked his first appearance of the season for Barcelona and an immediate test of Flick’s goalkeeping hierarchy.

The Barça coach went with experience. With Garcia unable to continue, Flick chose the veteran Szczęsny ahead of summer signing Dominik Livakovic, a clear nod to the former Juventus man’s status when the stakes rise.

Early indications, though, brought a measure of relief. According to RAC1, the decision to withdraw Garcia was precautionary, with the initial assessment suggesting the Spain international has avoided a serious problem. The club will still put him through further tests to be sure.

Barcelona now wait on those results, hoping their emerging No. 1 is fit to return in time for Saturday’s La Liga meeting with Sevilla, where Flick’s choice between youth, pedigree and a new signing could again shape the story of his season.
