Balogun Transfer Race: Villa and Barcelona Join Tottenham in €60m Chase

Folarin Balogun has turned this transfer window on its head. A year ago he was a rising talent. Now he’s a €60 million decision for three of Europe’s biggest leagues.

Fresh from a standout season at Monaco and an eye-catching World Cup with the United States, the 25-year-old has drawn what French outlet L'Equipe describe as “concrete” interest from Aston Villa and Barcelona. They arrive late to a race Tottenham Hotspur thought they were leading.

Spurs had already opened formal talks over a €60m deal, moving early as they searched for a new focal point in attack. Those discussions underlined how highly they rate the forward who hit 19 goals in 43 games across all competitions for Monaco last season. He didn’t just score; he carried their attack for long spells.

Villa’s contingency plan and Barcelona’s rebuild

At Aston Villa, Balogun is being watched as part of a contingency plan. The club are scanning the market in case Ollie Watkins is lured away by Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Lose Watkins, and Unai Emery will need a ready-made replacement who can step straight into a Champions League-chasing side. Balogun fits the profile: quick, direct, and already used to the pressure of big nights.

Barcelona’s need is even more urgent. They have already parted ways with Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, ripping out the heart of their frontline. With the season looming and goals suddenly in short supply, the Catalan club have turned to Balogun as a key piece in their attacking rebuild. He offers something they lack: a central striker in his prime, with the confidence of a player who has just delivered for club and country.

Monaco’s stance and the €60m question

Monaco know exactly what they have – and what they could cash in on. The Ligue 1 side are understood to be open to a sale at the right price, using a similar strategy to the one that saw Maghnes Akliouche move to Paris Saint-Germain. The logic is clear: sell a major asset, reinvest, and reshape the squad.

That doesn’t mean everyone at the club is ready to let him go.

Head coach Filipe Luis made his feelings plain when asked about the striker’s future.

“He is one of our players. I know he’s going to receive a lot of offers given his last season and his World Cup performance,” Luis said. “He’s a special player. You don’t find many players on the market with his attributes. If he stays, I’ll be really, really happy to have him with us.”

The admiration is obvious. So is the realism. Monaco have set their price at around €60m. Anyone serious will have to pay it.

Tottenham, for their part, have drawn up alternatives – including Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush – but Balogun remains at the top of their list. Villa and Barcelona, too, are weighing up whether to commit that level of money before the window shuts.

Balogun missed Monaco’s 3-2 Europa Conference League playoff win over Gornik Zabrze in Poland, though he has been registered on their UEFA squad list. That detail matters: it keeps every option open, from staying and leading Monaco’s European push to leaving for a club with Champions League or Premier League ambitions.

He is expected back in team training shortly, with an imminent call to be made on his involvement in Sunday’s Ligue 1 fixture against Le Havre. That decision will be revealing. Is he still Monaco’s man for the season ahead, or a €60m striker waiting for someone to pull the trigger?
