Aston Villa Signs Wan-Bissaka as Rebuild Progresses

Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, adding another significant piece to an already busy summer at Villa Park.

The DR Congo international will move to the Midlands on an initial loan, with an obligation to buy at the end of the season. He has been granted permission to travel for a medical, and the final details of the agreement are being finalised. West Ham had previously told suitors they wanted around £25m for the right-back.

Wan-Bissaka, 28, has sat out West Ham’s opening two Championship fixtures while talks have been ongoing, underlining how advanced the negotiations have become.

Villa’s low-net-spend rebuild

The move is the latest step in a summer of sharp dealing from both clubs.

West Ham have already cashed in on two major assets, selling Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham for £85m and Crysencio Summerville for £60m. They have at least locked down a cornerstone of their attack, with captain Jarrod Bowen signing a new contract.

Villa, for their part, have been just as active but in a different way. The headline departure was Morgan Rogers, sold to Chelsea for a huge £117m fee, a deal that has reshaped their financial picture.

Despite that outlay and income, Villa currently sit with the lowest net spend in the Premier League, at around £110m once sales are factored in. It is a rebuild done with calculation rather than chaos.

They have strengthened the spine and the flanks: midfielders Johan Manzambi and Joao Gomes have come through the door, while Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho has arrived on loan with an obligation to buy. Highly rated young centre-back Modou Keba Cisse has also been added to the defensive ranks.

Now comes Wan-Bissaka, a specialist right-back with top-flight experience, stepping into a squad that suddenly looks deeper, younger, and far more aggressive in key areas.

Villa’s numbers may say “lowest net spend.” Their intent says something very different.
