Aston Villa Signs Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG for €55m

Aston Villa have struck an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye, stealing a march on Liverpool in the race for the 18-year-old.

The Senegal international is heading to the Premier League, but not to Anfield. Liverpool had explored a move for Mbaye as they scoped out potential long-term successors to Mohamed Salah, yet balked at PSG’s demands and walked away from the table.

PSG’s valuation of Mbaye has swung throughout the summer depending on who was calling. Liverpool were quoted around €70 million. There was a feeling that fee could be negotiated down, but the club ultimately chose not to sink time and energy into a prolonged haggle.

Instead, Liverpool threw their weight behind a deal for top target Bradley Barcola. That single‑minded pursuit has opened the door for Villa, who have been tracking Mbaye for some time and were ready to move the moment the opportunity arose.

Long-term admiration, perfect timing

Villa’s interest is nothing new. The Midlands club were keen on Mbaye in January, only to be knocked back when PSG refused to sell midway through the season.

The situation shifted after the forward’s return from the Africa Cup of Nations. He struggled for minutes in the second half of the campaign, and with his pathway in Paris blocked, the teenager pushed for a move that would bring him regular game time. PSG, under pressure from the player and aware of his market value, have now agreed to cash in.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have reached a deal worth €55 million with PSG, helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. That connection smoothed the talks; the fee reflects both Mbaye’s potential and PSG’s willingness to compromise.

The transfer is in the final stages of being completed, with Mbaye expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park. Reports describe him as a long-standing target for the club rather than a late, opportunistic punt.

A teenager with big-game mileage

For an 18-year-old, Mbaye arrives with serious mileage at the top level. He has already made 42 senior appearances for PSG, gaining exposure in high-pressure environments domestically and in Europe, and he has represented Senegal at both the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter and the World Cup this summer.

That experience comes with a caveat: his momentum stalled after AFCON. Minutes dried up, competition intensified, and the sense grew that his development needed a new stage. Villa, under Unai Emery, are offering exactly that.

Emery has been keen to add another winger to his squad, someone who can stretch the pitch, attack one-on-one and grow with a side now accustomed to European football and higher expectations. Mbaye is expected to feature prominently rather than serve as a project for the future.

Leao talks fade, Mbaye steps in

Villa had also been in discussions over AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, aiming high as they sought to reinforce their attack. Those talks appear to have hit a dead end. Indications are that Leao has chosen Galatasaray as his preferred destination, unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal.

That setback might have left a gap in Villa’s plans. Instead, the agreement for Mbaye has dropped into place at exactly the right moment, giving Emery the dynamic wide option he wanted and handing Villa one of Europe’s most coveted teenage attackers.
