Aston Villa hijack Liverpool’s move for PSG starlet Ibrahim Mbaye in £55m coup

Liverpool spent the summer keeping Ibrahim Mbaye warm as a backup plan. Aston Villa have just walked in and taken him off the table.

While Anfield waited on the final green light for Bradley Barcola’s blockbuster switch from Paris Saint-Germain, Villa moved decisively to land Mbaye, the 18-year-old Senegalese right winger long tracked by the Reds.

Once Liverpool received approval on Thursday for Barcola’s £100 million move to Merseyside – still subject to a medical and not yet officially confirmed – the dominoes fell. With Mbaye no longer needed as insurance, Villa pounced.

Backed by major sales, including Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and others, the Birmingham club agreed a €55 million ($64 million) fee with PSG in what ranks as one of the window’s most eye-catching raids on a rival’s target.

It stings a little more for Liverpool when you look at the numbers. RMC Sport reported last week that the Reds and PSG were miles apart on Mbaye’s valuation, just as they had been during talks over Barcola. PSG wanted closer to £60 million ($82 million). Liverpool saw Mbaye as a £43 million ($59 million) player.

Villa’s agreed €55 million sits far nearer Liverpool’s figure than PSG’s original stance.

David Ornstein of The Athletic confirmed on Friday that Villa had reached an agreement with PSG. The twist is that this wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment gamble: Villa have monitored Mbaye since January, always lurking in the background, rarely mentioned among the favourites for his signature.

Now they’ve got him.

Mbaye’s rise has been rapid but carefully managed. He joined PSG in 2018 at the age of 10 from FC Versailles 78, the same youth club that once helped shape Thierry Henry before his move to Monaco.

By 16, Mbaye had become the youngest-ever player to start for PSG, breaking into Luis Enrique’s first-team squad and holding his own in a star-studded, Champions League-winning environment. In 2024 he made 39 appearances for the two-time reigning European champions, a remarkable workload for a teenager in that dressing room.

His progress carried onto the international stage. Mbaye was used as a rotation option for Senegal at the 2026 World Cup, and he still found a way to leave a mark, scoring against France in the group stage.

When he was left out of Enrique’s bench for PSG’s opening Ligue 1 game amid swirling transfer rumours, the sense grew that a move was close. Few expected it to be Villa who closed the deal.

Villa’s squad, though, barely resembles the one that lifted the 2026 Europa League. This is a club in full rebuild mode after European glory. A string of 2025/26 regulars have gone: Rogers to Manchester City, Konsa to Arsenal, Watkins to Al Hilal, Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, Emiliano Martinez to Chelsea, Lucas Digne to PSG, with Tammy Abraham also likely to depart for Ipswich Town.

In their place, a new core is forming. Jordi Manzambi has arrived from Freiburg, Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, Zion Suzuki from Parma, Joao Gomes from Wolves, Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid, Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich, Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham, and others besides.

Now Mbaye joins that wave of arrivals, one of Europe’s brightest teenage wingers dropped into a side being torn down and rebuilt at speed.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are left hoping nothing late derails Barcola’s £100 million move. If anything goes wrong at the medical stage, the fallback option they spent all summer nurturing will be wearing claret and blue instead.
