Arsenal Secures Northern Ireland Starlet Phoenix Blayney

Arsenal have won a fiercely contested battle for one of Northern Ireland’s brightest prospects, with 15-year-old Phoenix Blayney set to join the club from Larne.

The teenager impressed during a trial with the Gunners, catching the eye of academy staff and accelerating the club’s move to secure his signature. Liverpool and Nottingham Forest both put contracts on the table and Blayney was even spotted at Anfield in full Liverpool kit after a visit to their training base, underlining how serious the competition had become.

In the end, Arsenal closed the door on the chase.

“Everything has been agreed with Arsenal, he just needs to sign the contract,” he told the Belfast Telegraph. “It’s done and dusted and a pre-contract will be signed when the time is right.”

The plan is clear. Blayney is expected to sign a pre-contract when he links up with Arsenal this summer, before committing to professional terms once he turns 17 in November 2027. It is a pathway Arsenal know well. Marli Salmon and Max Dowman have followed the same route this season, signing pre-contracts ahead of their own professional deals on their 17th birthdays.

For the Blayney family, Arsenal’s pitch cut through the noise of the Premier League scramble. Alan described the Gunners as the “shining light between them all” when assessing the offers on the table.

Phoenix felt it too. The connection with the club’s staff during his time in north London left a mark.

“Phoenix enjoyed being at Arsenal, he felt a connection there and really likes the coaches,” his father added.

There is also a familiar face waiting for him. One of his close friends, Daniel McCarron, has already joined Arsenal, adding another pull towards London. The pair are teammates with Northern Ireland and will now look to continue that partnership in the same academy setup.

For Arsenal, this is another statement in a clear strategy. The club have been aggressive in recruiting elite youth talent, determined to stock their academy with players viewed as top-tier prospects. Internally, Blayney sits firmly in that bracket.

A 15-year-old leaving Larne for one of England’s giants might once have slipped under the radar. Not anymore. When Liverpool and Nottingham Forest are in the room and still walk away empty-handed, people take notice.

Arsenal already have.
