Arsenal Dominates Manchester City 3-0 in Community Shield

Arsenal picked up exactly where they left off.

Mikel Arteta’s side brushed Manchester City aside with a 3-0 win in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday, delivering a statement performance and a record-extending 18th triumph in the curtain-raiser.

Riccardo Calafiori needed less than a minute to make his mark. Myles Lewis-Skelly drove into space and fizzed a low ball across the area; Calafiori arrived with perfect timing to steer it home and jolt City before they had even settled.

The early shock never really wore off for Enzo Maresca. In his first competitive game in charge of City, the new manager watched his side struggle to live with Arsenal’s tempo and aggression.

The pressure told again before the interval. Kai Havertz, sharp and decisive, doubled the lead, tightening Arsenal’s grip on a contest that already felt one-sided. Every transition looked dangerous, every red shirt seemed to run with purpose.

Any hope of a City response vanished almost immediately after the restart. Three minutes into the second half, Martin Odegaard twisted the knife. The captain glided past Josko Gvardiol, then Gianluigi Donnarumma, and coolly added a third. It was the signature moment of a display that earned him player-of-the-match honours and underlined his growing authority in this team.

By then, Maresca’s debut had turned into damage limitation. Arsenal, by contrast, looked like a side intent on carrying last season’s momentum straight into the new campaign.

They will now roll into Friday night’s Premier League opener at the Emirates Stadium against newly promoted Coventry City with confidence surging and silverware already in the cabinet.

Arteta’s work, though, is not confined to the touchline.

Behind the scenes, Arsenal are pushing just as hard. The club’s recruitment machine, already busy over the summer, is targeting another key piece off the pitch. According to Sky reporter Patrick Berger, Arsenal have registered their interest in Borussia Dortmund chief scout Sebastian Krug and have made initial contact over a potential move.

Krug is no minor figure in Dortmund’s rise as a selling powerhouse. He has spent close to a decade at the Bundesliga club and has been central to some of their most lucrative deals. His fingerprints are on the signings of Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, two recruits who later generated huge transfer fees and reshaped the European market.

Sky Germany reports that talks between Arsenal and Krug have already taken place in London. The Gunners are not alone in their pursuit: Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also understood to have shown interest in prising the scout away from Dortmund.

Krug has held the chief scout role since 2022 and, since November 2024, has shared the position with Laurent Busser. His contract at Dortmund runs until 2028, a long commitment that hands the German club significant leverage in any negotiations.

If Arsenal decide to push hard and strike a deal, Krug would represent another heavyweight addition to a recruitment structure that has already helped reshape the first-team squad this summer. The football on the pitch is already sending a message. The question now is whether the club can land one of Europe’s most respected talent-spotters to keep that momentum flowing for years, not just weeks.
