Alexander Isak Shines with Quick Brace Against Ipswich

Alexander Isak needed only 10 minutes to rip the noise out of Portman Road.

The Swedish striker struck twice in a blistering opening to Liverpool’s trip to Ipswich Town on Friday, Sept. 4, scoring in the sixth and ninth minutes to hand the visitors a dream start.

Both goals carried the fingerprints of Cody Gakpo, who remains a Liverpool player despite heavy transfer speculation and a deadline-day full of whispers. He responded not with words, but with vision and precision.

For the opener, Gakpo drifted infield and spotted Isak lurking on the edge of the box. The pass invited a hit. Isak obliged, letting fly from distance. Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen got a touch, but not enough; the ball squirmed past him and into the net.

The second goal was sharper, cleaner, and owed even more to Gakpo’s imagination.

Deep in his own half, the Dutchman shaped his body one way and then, with the outside of his boot, carved a stunning ball into the channel between Ipswich’s back line and the edge of the area. It cut the Tractor Boys open. Isak burst onto it, still with work to do, still with defenders to beat.

He slowed, squared up his marker, then danced past with confident footwork before tucking a left-footed finish beyond Scherpen. Two chances, two ruthless conclusions.

By the time the clock ticked into double figures, Isak had a brace and Liverpool had the game exactly where they wanted it.

The numbers are starting to stack up. Isak’s double took him to three goals for the season. Gakpo, with those two assists to go with an earlier strike this campaign, now sits on three assists and one goal — not bad for a player who spent the week reading his name in transfer columns.

The rapid-fire salvo also etched itself into the record books. Isak’s brace was the fastest from the opening whistle by a Liverpool player since 2011, when Maxi Rodriguez stunned Fulham with two goals inside the first seven minutes. For Ipswich, it went down as one of the quickest two-goal concessions in the club’s Premier League history.

Portman Road has seen its share of drama. But on this night, in those first frantic minutes, it witnessed something else: a Liverpool forward line that, with Isak finishing and Gakpo threading passes from deep, looked like it could tear open just about anyone.
