Alejandro Balde's Critical Period at Barcelona

Alejandro Balde has entered a make-or-break stretch at Barcelona.

The club spent the summer listening to offers and sounding out possible exits. Manchester United appeared on the horizon as a serious option, but nothing advanced far enough. The window closed, the move never came, and Balde stayed put at Camp Nou.

Now the clock is ticking.

Flick wants more – and Balde knows it

Hansi Flick has already sent a clear message: he expected a higher level from the 22-year-old. Not just in flashes, not just in favourable games, but consistently. For Balde, that turns every training session and every minute on the pitch into an exam.

He is not simply fighting for game time. He is fighting to rewrite the internal scouting report on him – to convince a new coach that he can be trusted as a reliable, long-term solution at left-back.

The next four months will go a long way to deciding that.

Stuck behind Espart and Cancelo

The path is crowded. Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo currently sit ahead of Balde in the pecking order on the left. That hierarchy leaves little margin for error.

To climb it, Balde has to show in training that he can hit the level Barcelona demand: intensity without the ball, clarity with it, and the defensive focus Flick insists on from his full-backs. He already knows the checklist. Now he has to tick every box.

If he doesn’t, January looms as a turning point.

A valuable asset, and a looming decision

Inside the club, Balde is still seen as a significant asset. His market value is estimated between €30m and €40m, a figure that gives Barcelona room to manoeuvre if they decide to cash in.

Should his role remain limited and the doubts persist, a winter sale would not only bring in money. It would also accelerate the search for a specialist left-back, and that is where one name keeps resurfacing: Jorge Salinas.

Barcelona view the Racing Santander defender as one of the main candidates to reinforce the position if Balde moves on. The interest is real. The complication is, too.

Salinas price on the rise

Racing Santander have already acted to protect their gem, raising Salinas’ release clause. Any club wanting to prise him away now faces a steeper bill, and Barcelona are no exception.

If Balde leaves and the need becomes urgent, Salinas could quickly become more expensive, both in terms of fee and negotiating leverage. The timing of any decision on Balde will directly influence the cost of his potential replacement.

For the moment, though, Barcelona can wait. There is no obligation to decide today, no immediate trigger they must pull before January. That breathing space suits everyone.

Balde still has what many players at 22 do not: age on his side, powerful physical attributes, and strong market value. Above all, he controls the only currency that truly matters to Flick and the Barcelona hierarchy between now and winter – his performances.
