Ajax Signs Femke Liefting on Season-Long Loan from Chelsea
Ajax have turned to familiar talent to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks, bringing Femke Liefting back to the Azerion Vrouwen Eredivisie on a season-long loan from Chelsea for the 2026/27 campaign.
The Dutch giants confirmed the deal on their official channels on Monday morning, sealing a move that offers both club and player exactly what they need: depth and experience for Ajax, and minutes and rhythm for a young goalkeeper whose career has stalled through injury.
A return to where it all began
For Liefting, 21, this is not just another loan. It is a return to the league that first showcased her potential.
She broke through at VV Alkmaar, impressing enough to earn a switch to neighbours AZ in 2023. Her sharp reflexes and composure quickly marked her out as one of the more promising young goalkeepers in the Dutch game, and it was not long before bigger clubs started to circle.
Chelsea, fresh from their domestic dominance in the Barclays Women’s Super League, moved decisively. Liefting signed for The Blues in January 2025, a bold step into one of the most competitive squads in European football.
Promise interrupted in England
The move to London, though, has not unfolded as smoothly as the trajectory suggested.
Foot and hip injuries cut into her development, halting momentum just as she was trying to adapt to a new country, a new league and a higher standard of daily training. The pathway to Chelsea’s first team is steep at the best of times; doing it while rehabbing from injury is steeper still.
She did manage to get some crucial minutes under her belt during a loan spell at Newcastle United last season, a stint that at least put her back in the rhythm of match days and dressing-room battles. But for a goalkeeper of her age and profile, sporadic action is not enough.
Ajax now offer something different: the realistic prospect of regular starts in a league she knows, in a team that expects to compete for trophies.
Ajax’s intent and Liefting’s next step
Technical manager Dolf Roks made clear why Ajax moved for her, underlining both her pedigree and her potential.
“Femke is a talented goalkeeper who has already proven her quality in the Vrouwen Eredivisie. She also gained valuable experience at the highest level during her time at Chelsea, where she continued to develop. We are delighted that she will add experience and quality to our squad for the coming season,” he said.
That blend is exactly what Ajax are banking on: a player young enough to grow, but hardened just enough by setbacks and big-club standards to handle the pressure of a title-chasing side.
For Liefting, the equation is simple. She needs games. She needs to feel the ball in her hands every week, not just in training. She needs the rhythm of competitive football that only a regular starting role can provide.
Long-term ties, short-term urgency
Chelsea still clearly see value in her future. Liefting remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2028, a long-term deal that underlines the club’s belief that her story there is not finished.
This loan, then, is not a parting. It is a pause. A reset.
If she can stay fit and reclaim the form that first drew Chelsea’s scouts to Alkmaar and AZ, this season with Ajax could do more than revive a promising career. It could decide whether she returns to London as a genuine contender for the No. 1 shirt – or carves out a different path as a leading goalkeeper back on home soil.
