Youri Tielemans Apologizes to Aston Villa Fans After Manchester United Comments

Youri Tielemans has moved quickly to calm a storm of his own making, apologising to Aston Villa supporters after describing Manchester United as “a club above” his former side.

The Belgium midfielder, 29, left Villa Park for Old Trafford this summer when United activated a £35m release clause in his contract, handing him a five-year deal. His departure ended a three-year spell in the Midlands after joining from Leicester City in 2023, a period in which he made 134 appearances and scored 10 goals for Villa.

It was during United’s pre-season tour that Tielemans lit the fuse. Reflecting on his time at Villa, he praised the club for reviving his career, saying they had put him “back to my best level”. Then came the line that jarred.

“But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”

Those words travelled fast. Sections of the Villa fanbase, who had embraced him through European nights and a rapid rise under Unai Emery, reacted angrily to the implication their club sits beneath his new employers in the pecking order.

Tielemans did not let the backlash simmer for long. Taking to Instagram on Thursday, he attempted to repair the damage.

“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote.

“I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.

“Wishing the club the best in the future.”

It leaves Tielemans starting life at Manchester United with a reminder of how every sentence lands in a league where loyalties run deep and memories run long.
