Youri Tielemans Adapts to Carrick's Manchester United

Youri Tielemans says adapting to Michael Carrick’s Manchester United has been as natural as “smelling football” for a midfielder who has seen almost everything the game can throw at him.

The £35m signing, 29 and already 579 games deep into his senior career, has barely been at the club two weeks but is already talking like a player who understands exactly what is being asked of him.

‘Just smelling football’

Carrick’s United are still very much a work in progress, but Tielemans insists the demands are crystal clear.

“He has got his structure. He wants to have the ball, he wants to press in certain ways, you know,” Tielemans said during the club’s pre-season tour. “It might be different than what you are used to, what I have been used to before, but it is logical things in my opinion. It is just smelling football, and that is what I have been doing from when I was young at Anderlecht.”

That line – “smelling football” – sums up the way he sees the game. For Tielemans, this is not a radical reinvention, just a refinement.

“So for me, nothing changes, but it just needs to gel together,” he continued. “Then when you follow those principles, then you can add your offensive qualities, especially in the last third where everything is a bit more in freedom, without obviously overcommitting and keeping the defensive line in place, then I think we can do good things.”

He has been bedding in with his new teammates across 10 days on tour and made his first appearance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg, a low-key debut for a player whose career has rarely moved quietly.

A career built on early responsibility

Tielemans was 16 when he first stepped out for Anderlecht’s senior side. From there came the move to Monaco in 2017, Leicester in 2019 and Aston Villa four years later. Now United, at last.

With that kind of mileage, Carrick’s tactical tweaks are unlikely to intimidate him. He has played in Champions League nights, relegation fights, title pushes and tournament knockouts. The vocabulary of pressing triggers and possession structures is familiar ground.

United triggered his release clause to finally bring him to Old Trafford and, this time, there were no late twists.

“United previously showed interest in signing the Belgium captain, reportedly in 2019 and 2022. “There has been two times that I spoke with the club, but it did not achieve to anything, so I was just very calm about it. It was way after Anderlecht,” Tielemans said.

This time, there was no bidding war either. Asked if any other club tried to hijack the deal, he replied: “Not that I am aware of, no.”

Fitness doubts dismissed

If there is a question mark, it hangs over his body rather than his brain.

Last season, Tielemans started only 25 Premier League games for Villa because of injuries. Then came a hamstring issue in the warm-up before Belgium’s World Cup quarter-final against Spain in July, a brutal way to see a major tournament slip away.

He is adamant that does not mean he needs to be wrapped in cotton wool.

“Not really,” he said when asked if Carrick would have to rest him at times. “The thing is, at the World Cup, I think we played 120 minutes against Senegal [before Spain], and from there we had less time in between games. So we played the US I think three or four days later [actually five days] and then three days later we played against Spain. In the warm-up, my body just switched off for some reason.

“Now, I do not think I am a player that I absolutely need a rest. Obviously, there are a lot of games and the manager needs to manage the team, but when I am good, I am good, you know.

“Unfortunately, my body is … when it does not go well, then I will know straight away and I will alert the manager, but it does not happen often.”

United will test that conviction. The schedule will be relentless, the scrutiny even harsher. Tielemans sounds ready for both. Now comes the real examination: can that instinct for “smelling football” turn Carrick’s structure into something that wins?
