Paris Saint-Germain are staring at a critical few days in the Yan Diomande saga, with the deal threatening to unravel just as Liverpool sense a way back into a race they once thought was lost.

The 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger has been at the centre of Liverpool’s succession planning for months. With Mohamed Salah leaving Anfield at the end of last season after nine glittering years, the club identified Diomande as the marquee wide player to inherit that right flank. By December, Liverpool were in near-daily contact with his camp, pushing hard to bring him to Merseyside this summer.

Then the story flipped.

Diomande made it clear he would prioritise a move to Paris Saint-Germain if he left Leipzig. That stance hit Liverpool hard and immediately shifted the balance of power. PSG moved swiftly, opening talks with Leipzig and positioning themselves as the clear favourites. For a while, it looked like a formality. The teenager wanted Paris, Paris wanted him, and Leipzig were ready to listen.

Four weeks on, nothing is agreed. Instead of a smooth, elite-club transaction, German reports now describe the situation as on the verge of a “fiasco” for PSG. The problem is simple and brutal: money.

Leipzig, as has been consistently reported, are demanding a record fee to let Diomande go this summer. Their preference is to keep him for at least one more season, but they will sell if their price is met. According to Bild, that price is a compromise figure of €120m (£102.5m, $136.5m) – and they have labelled it their minimum.

That number has become the fault line.

Luis Enrique admires Diomande and would gladly add him to an already stacked forward line. He does not, however, believe the teenager justifies such an outlay, particularly when he cannot guarantee him regular minutes. With Kylian Mbappé gone but attacking options still abundant, the PSG coach has reportedly told transfer advisor Luis Campos he is against paying that level of fee.

Leipzig are unmoved. They will not go lower, even though they know keeping a player who has clearly set his heart on leaving can poison the atmosphere. The club have been here before and are prepared to hold their ground.

The stand-off is fraying nerves. PSG are content to wait and see if Leipzig blink. Diomande’s entourage, who expected a deal to be wrapped up by now, are growing increasingly frustrated with the delay. Bild reports that his camp, working with powerful advisory agency Roc Nation, are ready to ramp up the pressure to force a resolution.

Timing is awkward. After a short holiday following his World Cup exertions with Ivory Coast, Diomande is due back at Leipzig’s training complex next week. If he walks through the doors still a Leipzig player, the dynamic shifts again. Every session he completes in club colours is a reminder that the Bundesliga side hold the cards for now.

In Germany, the situation is already being compared to that of Xavi Simons. He wanted out of Leipzig in 2024, only to find suitors put off by the club’s valuation. A year later, a move to Tottenham Hotspur went through at a reduced price. Leipzig extracted value, but only after a long, tense wait.

That precedent will not be lost on any of the parties circling Diomande.

The potential collapse of PSG’s move has inevitably alerted Liverpool. They saw an initial offer rejected earlier in the window but, crucially, have no issue with the £102.5m valuation if the door reopens. For a club searching for a statement replacement for Salah, the chance to revive a deal for a player they have tracked for months would be too tempting to ignore.

They are not alone. Arsenal and Manchester City have both been linked with attempts to hijack the transfer, aware that a stalled negotiation between PSG and Leipzig can quickly turn into an open auction at the very top of the market.

Even so, sources close to the situation maintain that a move to Paris remains the most likely outcome. Both clubs are still working towards a full agreement, and Diomande is still said to be adamant that he wants to join the French champions. That desire counts for something, even in a deal of this size.

While they wait, Liverpool are not standing still. The recruitment team at Anfield have been exploring other winger options, with PSG’s Bradley Barcola among those heavily linked. Reports suggest the 23-year-old could yet push to leave Paris and engineer what has been described as an “absolutely outrageous” move to Anfield.

For now, though, the market’s spotlight remains fixed on Diomande. A teenage winger, one giant fee, and Europe’s elite circling as Leipzig hold firm. Someone will eventually blink. The only question is whether the next decisive move comes from Paris, Leipzig, or a Liverpool hierarchy ready to pounce the moment the door creaks open.
