Xabi Alonso Explains Enzo Fernandez's Omission Against Luton

Xabi Alonso insisted Chelsea’s decision to leave Enzo Fernandez out of the squad to face Luton was a calculated call made between himself and the club – and not a move driven by the player.

Fernandez, who came off the bench in Monday night’s Premier League opener against Fulham, was completely absent as Chelsea eased past Jack Wilshere’s League One side 2-0, courtesy of a debut strike from Danny Welbeck and a late own goal forced by Estevao. Not even a place on the bench. Not even a cameo.

With Manchester City understood to be lining up a bid to take the 25-year-old to the Etihad and reunite him with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, the omission felt like the loudest hint yet that a transfer could be edging closer before Tuesday night’s 11pm BST deadline.

Alonso, though, pushed back on that narrative.

“We assess individually, collectively, what's the best for the team, for tonight, what was better for other players that were playing and we take the decision,”

he said when pressed on leaving Fernandez out.

Reports in Argentina had suggested Fernandez himself had asked not to play against Luton. Alonso knocked that down immediately.

“No, it was a decision from myself and from the club,”

he replied.

The Chelsea head coach was then asked directly if the midfielder’s absence was linked to ongoing talks between City and Chelsea.

“No, it's just because of the game today and we had other players that needed minutes and it was that way,”

he said, framing it as a rotation call rather than a transfer signal.

Alonso revealed he made the call on Wednesday afternoon, after his pre-match press conference in which he had publicly expected Fernandez to feature in some capacity.

“It's a decision that I took,”

he said, declining to clarify whether he had spoken to Fernandez one-to-one about it.

“He's a good professional. He's training well and I have nothing to say about him. It was just a decision that we had to take, thinking about the game that we're playing tonight and we'll see for Sunday [against Brighton].”

For now, Chelsea insist it was just about Luton and minutes. The clock, and Manchester City, may yet tell a different story before the window slams shut.
