Perez arrived in Castellon with momentum and reputation. He had just taken Rayo Vallecano to eighth in La Liga in 2024-25 and then driven them all the way to a Conference League final. Villarreal saw a rising coach and handed him the keys after Marcelino’s exit in the summer.

The bounce has not followed him.

His Villarreal side are winless in five across all competitions. The season opened with back-to-back 2-2 draws against Racing Santander and Atletico Madrid, entertaining but fragile. Then came the damage: defeats to Alaves and Deportivo La Coruna that stripped away early optimism and exposed a team still searching for structure.

Europe brought no relief. In Perez’s first Champions League match as a head coach, Villarreal scored twice in Dortmund – through a Santiago Mourino header and a stoppage-time own goal – and still walked away beaten 3-2. They fought, but they cracked.

Now comes a pivotal week. Betis at home, Malaga and Levante to follow, and then a three-week international break that will frame the narrative around Perez’s start. He needs a result, and quickly.

History offers him at least a sliver of comfort. Across five previous meetings with Betis as a manager, he has never lost (one win, four draws). It is not much, but it is something.

Betis riding the wave

Betis arrive in a very different mood.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have taken four wins from their first five competitive games this season, including a statement 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in their last La Liga outing. That alone sharpened the sense that Betis are ready to push the established order again.

They backed it up in Europe. Back in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2005-06, Betis went to Lille and came through a wild contest 3-2. They twice trailed. They refused to bend.

Marc Bartra, the centre-back, chose the perfect night to produce a brace, hauling his team level on both occasions. Then Troy Parrott, the match-winner against Real Madrid, stepped up again. On his Champions League debut, he struck the decisive goal and turned a dramatic night into a defining one.

Betis sit fifth in La Liga, only three points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. The table is still young, but the intent is clear.

They also travel well to this ground. Last season they took four points from six against Villarreal, including a breathless draw at La Ceramica where Antony scored twice to salvage a point from two goals down. Betis have not lost on any of their last four league visits here (two wins, two draws) since a 2-0 defeat in October 2021.

It is not a fortress for them. It is familiar territory.

Team news: changes coming for Villarreal, stability for Betis

Perez is expected to shuffle his pack to cope with the schedule.

Carlos Romero is set to miss out, while Juan Foyth, absent from the last two games with injury, is unlikely to be risked. Between the posts, Peter Gulacsi is in line for his La Liga debut after displacing Luiz Junior for the narrow defeat in Dortmund.

Rotation should open the door for Alex Freeman, Nicolas Pepe, Alberto Moleiro, Ayoze Perez and Gerard Moreno, all pushing to start on Monday as Villarreal search for a formula that sticks.

Betis have fewer moving parts.

Aitor Ruibal remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from the knee injury that ended his last campaign. There is better news elsewhere: Abde Ezzalzouli and Diego Llorente are expected to be available, with Llorente set to play in a protective mask after breaking his nose against Real Madrid.

On the right flank, Antony is tipped to shake off illness in time to start, a significant boost given his impact in this fixture last season.
