According to French outlet Foot Mercato, citing The Athletic, Palmer is now expected to withdraw from the squad. The decision is understood to be driven by a desire to manage his workload, with the coaching staff wary of overloading him in a congested spell of fixtures. For a player who has become central to Chelsea’s plans, the risk of burnout is real, and England look set to pay the price.

And the problems don’t stop there.

Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also doubts for the international window. Both sit firmly in the “wait and see” category, but the uncertainty alone is enough to disrupt preparations. Rashford brings experience and direct threat; Mainoo offers balance and control in midfield. Lose both, and Tuchel’s options narrow fast.

The timing could hardly be worse. With Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic lined up, these are not games that invite experimentation for its own sake. Yet Tuchel may now be forced into exactly that, tweaking his plans and leaning on alternatives earlier than he would have liked.
