Trezeguet Out for a Month: Major Setback for Egypt

Al-Riyadh have confirmed that Egyptian international Mahmoud Hassan "Trezeguet" has suffered a torn hamstring, ruling him out for four weeks and sending a shudder through Hossam Hassan’s Egypt plans.

The Saudi club announced the news on Wednesday via their official account on X, ending any lingering hope that the winger’s problem might be minor.

The injury came early and brutally. In the sixth round of the Saudi Roshn League against Al-Khaleej on Monday, Trezeguet went down inside the opening stages and left the pitch in tears in the 13th minute, a worrying sight for both club and country.

Medical examinations later confirmed a hamstring tear. The decision followed quickly: Trezeguet will return to Cairo to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of Egypt’s medical staff, rather than remain in Saudi Arabia.

Egypt camp plans hit hard

For Hossam Hassan, the timing could hardly be worse. Egypt’s upcoming camp, scheduled to start on 17 September, will now go ahead without one of the national team’s most trusted attacking weapons.

The injury rules Trezeguet out of the Pharaohs’ first two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Egypt host Angola at Cairo Stadium on Friday 25 September, then travel to Juba to face South Sudan on Tuesday 29 September.

Those are fixtures where experience matters, and Trezeguet brings plenty of it. The former Aston Villa winger has long been one of Egypt’s key forward options, valued for his work rate, direct running, and big-game pedigree at international level.

Now Egypt must adjust, reshuffle their frontline, and find answers without a player who so often provides them.
