Premier League: Full-backs, forwards and a £100m midfield gamble

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is almost done. The next hole is obvious. Left-back. Talks have been held with the camp of Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, according to Fabrizio Romano, as United line up their next big piece.

The search does not end there. Ben Jacobs reports that RB Leipzig’s David Raum and Racing’s Jorge Salinas have both been offered to United, giving the club a spread of options as they work out who fits Erik ten Hag’s plans.

Their preferred choice, though, is off the table. Newcastle United have told United that Lewis Hall is not for sale. Sam C reports that the Magpies have opened talks over an improved deal to lock down the young defender and shut down any late-window drama.

Liverpool are also wrestling with their forward line. ESPN say the club have sounded out Real Madrid about Endrick, but the Brazilian has ruled out leaving the Bernabéu this summer. He wants his shot in Madrid, not Merseyside.

That doesn’t change Liverpool’s need. Finding proper competition for Alexander Isak has been marked as a priority, with indykaila claiming internal discussions over Porto’s William Gomes, Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade and Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta. A long list. No clear winner yet.

Mateta’s name keeps popping up. Football Insider report that Tottenham Hotspur are also in for the Crystal Palace striker as they look to bulk up their attacking options. The Frenchman suddenly finds himself at the centre of a London tug-of-war.

Spurs are busy elsewhere too. The i Paper say Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush is expected to follow teammate Savinho to north London in a deal worth around $75 million (£55 million). If that move lands, Ange Postecoglou’s front line will look very different very quickly.

Manchester City, for their part, are already plotting their next midfield coup. El Nacional report that City plan to move for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong once he returns from injury, with a January approach on the cards. Another Barca midfielder on Pep Guardiola’s radar. Another saga waiting to ignite.

Across London, Chelsea’s attack is under the microscope again. MARCA claim Atlético Madrid director Mateu Alemany has flown to London for talks over a loan deal for Nicolas Jackson. Chelsea, though, have other ideas. According to The Telegraph, they would rather cash in permanently and are expecting an $89 million (£65 million) bid from Aston Villa.

Villa’s interest is tied directly to Ollie Watkins. The Athletic report that the striker is pushing for a move to Al Hilal after the Saudi club failed with a fourth bid worth $61 million (£45 million). If Villa finally relent, Jackson could be the man asked to fill one of the Premier League’s most demanding roles.

At the back, one of Europe’s most coveted defenders is being circled. TEAMtalk report that Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham are all eyeing a late summer move for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba. Three clubs, one powerful defender, and a shrinking window.

Liverpool’s midfield rebuild may not be done yet either. CaughtOffside say the club are chasing Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as they prepare to sell Curtis Jones to Inter. The price is eye-watering: as much as $136 million (£100 million) to get Wharton out of Selhurst Park. That would be a statement, and a gamble.

On the continent, AC Milan are hunting for a new centre-back and, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, are considering a move for Manchester City’s Rúben Dias, who is available for transfer. If City really are ready to part with one of their defensive leaders, the ripple effects could reshape the market at the very top.

La Liga: Barcelona’s striker puzzle and a Real Madrid windfall

In Spain, the noise is no quieter.

Real Madrid face a decision on Rodrygo. Fichajes report that the club will consider selling the winger when he returns from injury if he fails to impress new coach José Mourinho. With just two years left on his contract, the clock is ticking on a renewal or a sale.

Across the capital, Atlético Madrid’s stance on Julián Alvarez has shifted. Mundo Deportivo claim that, having previously rejected his transfer request, Atlético have now agreed to negotiate his departure – but only with Arsenal. Alvarez has rejected that route and is pushing instead for a move to Barcelona, setting up a tense standoff between player and club.

Barcelona are preparing their own contingency. El Chiringuito report that the Catalan side have agreed personal terms with Inter forward Lautaro Martínez as a potential alternative to Alvarez. The message is clear: one way or another, they want a marquee striker.

The pressure on Martínez to choose his next step is only growing. El Nacional say Lionel Messi has urged his Argentina teammate to join Barcelona if he wants to win the Champions League. When Messi speaks, players listen. Whether Inter do is another matter entirely.

Back in Madrid, there is unexpected good news on the balance sheet. AS report that Nottingham Forest are pursuing Celta Vigo defender Javi Rueda, and thanks to a 50% sell-on clause, Real Madrid stand to collect as much as $17.5 million (€15 million) from any deal.

In a window already thick with big names and bigger numbers, that kind of windfall could yet fund the next twist in Madrid’s own transfer story.
