Tottenham's Summer Rebuild: Romero and Sarr Seek Exit

Tottenham’s summer rebuild is starting to bite – and not everyone wants to stick around for it.

Cristian Romero and Pape Matar Sarr both want out of Spurs before the window shuts, with Romero already edging towards the exit door as Inter Milan close in on a deal.

Spurs rip it up after relegation scare

Tottenham came uncomfortably close to disaster last season, clinging to their Premier League status on the final day to avoid dropping into the Championship. That brush with the abyss has jolted the hierarchy into action.

Roberto De Zerbi has been backed heavily. Six new faces are already through the door in north London. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have arrived on free transfers, while Spurs have thrown serious money at the problem elsewhere.

Around £237m has gone on Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, a sweeping overhaul designed to harden the spine of a side that flirted with catastrophe.

The next phase? Goals and width. Tottenham are now turning their attention to the flanks, with Manchester City’s Savinho and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo among their leading attacking targets as they look to add pace and cutting edge in wide areas.

But every rebuild has a cost. And in north London, some big names are being pushed towards the door.

Romero says yes to Inter

Cristian “Cuti” Romero is one of them. The Argentina international, once seen as a cornerstone of Spurs’ defence, is now at the centre of a transfer tug that looks close to being resolved.

Fabrizio Romano has already flagged the situation, reporting on X that Inter Milan are “expected to make final decision soon” on Romero. On his YouTube channel, he underlined the sense of movement around the defender, saying Inter are “on it” and that more clubs are keen, while still expecting Romero to leave Tottenham in this window.

Now, in Italy, the story has sharpened.

Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, report that Romero has given the green light to Inter. The defender has reportedly agreed a contract worth €5.5m a year running until 2031 – a long-term commitment from the Serie A champions.

Inter are said to have reached an agreement with Spurs on a package of €35m plus €5m in bonuses, with a “verbally sealed” three-way agreement in place for the centre-back. For Tottenham, it would mean cashing in on a player still in his prime. For Inter, it would be the latest aggressive move from a club intent on staying on top in Italy and pushing deeper in Europe.

For Romero himself, it looks like a clean break and a fresh start at a club that has made a habit of winning.

Sarr squeezed out in crowded midfield

Romero is not alone in looking for the exit.

Pape Matar Sarr, the energetic Senegal international, also wants to move on as his path to regular football narrows under De Zerbi. The arrivals of Tonali and Fernandes have shoved him down the pecking order in a suddenly packed midfield.

Football Insider report that Sarr is “looking to leave” before the window closes, with Aston Villa among the clubs showing interest. At 23, and with minutes at a premium, the logic is clear from the player’s side.

Tottenham, for their part, are understood to be open to letting him go if the right offer arrives. De Zerbi is described as content with the depth he already has in midfield, a stance that only strengthens the likelihood of Sarr’s departure.

Villa are one of several sides monitoring the situation and could move in the final month of the window, sensing an opportunity to add a versatile, high-upside midfielder who needs a platform.

A ruthless reset

This is not a gentle transition. Tottenham’s response to last season’s near-miss has been ruthless: heavy spending, a new core, and a willingness to part with established internationals.

Romero appears to have chosen the San Siro. Sarr may yet swap a crowded Spurs engine room for a bigger role elsewhere, perhaps at Villa Park.

Tottenham wanted to avoid another relegation fight. The question now is whether this level of upheaval launches them back towards the top half – or simply starts a new kind of gamble.
