Tottenham's Ambitious Summer Rebuild Driven by Boardroom Decisions

Roberto De Zerbi insists Tottenham’s extraordinary summer rebuild has been driven from the boardroom, not the dugout.

Spurs have smashed through the £300million mark in this window, ripping up and reshaping a squad that flirted dangerously with relegation only a few months ago. The latest statement of intent came this week with the arrivals of Manchester City pair Omar Marmoush and Savio, adding more firepower and flair to a group already transformed.

De Zerbi has been widely praised for persuading high‑profile names such as Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke to buy into a project that, not long ago, looked anything but glamorous. Survival, not silverware, was the conversation then.

Ask him how central he has been to this aggressive recruitment drive, though, and he quickly shifts the spotlight upstairs.

“No, (what) makes the difference (is the) behaviour and ambition of the owner,” he said, making his stance crystal clear.

“These players are not here for me or because I need them. I am an employee of the club, I’m not the owner. But the ambition of the owner made the difference, for sure, because the owner pushed to close (deals for) the players.

“The owners’ ambition is so big, right through transfers, for every one of us, the players, the board, the staff, with myself. The motivation to do better.”

That ambition has already delivered eight new signings, yet Spurs are still not finished. The churn and change are ongoing, and so are the conversations behind closed doors.

On Thursday night, De Zerbi sat down for dinner with members of the Lewis Family, CEO Vinai Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange, with trusted translator Enrico Venturelli alongside him. The menu was the final week of the window.

“I think we can do one player more and in one specific position,” De Zerbi said.

The talks, he stressed, were harmonious rather than heated.

“We spoke about this, but we have all of us on the same page and there is a very good connection.”

That “one more” is expected to be targeted in wide areas or at right-back, where Spurs want extra depth and genuine competition for Pedro Porro.

A squad once built to survive now looks built to attack. And with the owners still pushing deals over the line, De Zerbi knows the scale of the ambition he has been asked to match.
