Tottenham Pursue Sandro Tonali in £72m Deal

Tottenham, fresh from surviving one of the most anxious relegation battles in their modern history, are wasting no time rewriting the script.

A narrow 1-0 win over Everton on the final day kept them in the Premier League and sent West Ham down instead. Two points. That was the margin between a great escape and a full-scale crisis. Inside the club, the message is clear: never again.

Four signings are already through the door. Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have arrived on free transfers from Burnley, Bournemouth and Liverpool, while Jan Paul van Hecke has been prised from Brighton in a £52m deal to bolster the heart of the defence. It is a rebuild with urgency, and with a clear spine in mind.

Now comes the headline act they want to build that midfield around.

Tonali at the centre of Spurs’ rebuild

Sandro Tonali has emerged as Tottenham’s priority target in the middle of the pitch. The Newcastle United midfielder, long seen as a cornerstone at St James’ Park, is now at the centre of one of the summer’s most aggressive moves.

TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed on Friday that Tonali has informed Newcastle he wants the move to north London. The Italy international is understood to be ready to accept Tottenham’s proposal, a package that would more than double his current salary on Tyneside.

Newcastle, though, are holding firm on their valuation. They are still asking for £100m for the 24-year-old, a figure that underlines both his importance and the financial muscle required to prise him away.

Even so, the momentum is unmistakable.

“Deal on”: Spurs push as rivals watch

Fabrizio Romano has been consistent. On his YouTube channel, the transfer specialist nailed his colours to the mast.

He reiterated that Tottenham are the main club in the race for Tonali, stressing that he is not currently putting forward Manchester City or any other suitor in the conversation. Since first linking Tonali and Tottenham last week, he has stuck to that line: “Deal on. Tottenham – Tonali.”

The noise around the move has only grown louder.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported on Thursday that Spurs were preparing a new bid, stating that Tonali had already given his approval for a contract running until 2032. Two other Premier League clubs are described as “at the window”, watching the situation, but it is Tottenham who are driving the talks.

Now Schira has gone further, claiming that Tottenham and Tonali have reached a “total agreement” on personal terms worth £72m over six years. Spurs are described as “confident” they can now find common ground with Newcastle on the fee.

A statement after a season on the brink

For a club that only just clung to its Premier League status, this is not a cautious step. It is a statement of intent.

Tottenham have already reshaped their back line and added experience with Robertson and Dubravka. Van Hecke brings age-profiled investment at centre-back. Yet the pursuit of Tonali goes beyond mere squad padding. It is the kind of move that signals a desire to drag the club away from the margins of the table and back into serious contention.

The question now is not whether Spurs want Tonali. That much is obvious. The question is whether they are prepared to go all the way to meet Newcastle’s demands and close a deal that would redefine their midfield for years to come.
